Can someone explain Savagery?

I’m new to the game, and I don’t quite get what the Shaman ability Savagery does. The tooltip lists the damage of the ability but also shows charge levels. I’m not sure how that works exactly.

As you hit targets with savagery it stacks ‘charges’ on your character which modify the power of the ability. The more charges you stack, the stronger it gets to a cap of 8 (I think?) charges at top level and 9 at maxed overcap. The tooltip should show you what % of its listed power it gives at each charge level, starting lower and scaling up past 100% of the listed power.

If you ever played Titan Quest, it functions similarly to the skill Onslaught from the Warfare tree

So…what do the charge percentages do the the listed percentages of the power?

For example, if it reads “115% Main Hand (x amount of damage)”, how do the charge levels affect this value? If the charge value starts at 30% (can’t remember exactly), does that mean that the first strike using Savagery will hit for 30% of 115% Main Hand damage? Or does it mean that the first strike will hit for 30% more than 115% of Main Hand damage?

Lastly, do the charge levels affect any and all abilities that a player may use, or just basic attacks?

As I understand it, you start out dealing less than the listed damage and build up to doing more. I am fairly certain of this but if I’m incorrect, someone please correct me.

This would mean that your first couple of savagery hits do 30, 45, or whatever percent of the listed %weapon damage and other flat damage benefits. By the time you have full charge you’re getting more than 100% of the listed %weapon damage and flat damage, meaning that there is a geometric (or logarithmic? it’s been a long time since math class) curve to your damage using savagery, starting below normal and scaling up well past it.

As for it affecting other things; I’m pretty sure that it used to but doesn’t any more. I don’t recall which patch changed it but I recall there being a change at some point to savagery that made its charges only affect savagery instead of any damage you deal. There have been a lot of mechanical tweaks and I admit to being a bit forgetful about which changes were when.

Can anyone speak to whether or not Savagery charges definitely do or do not affect other abilities?

The flat values affect other abilities, but only if those abilities scale with X% weapon damage. (Listed in their own tooltips.)

The percentage scaling values of Weapon Damage, Lightning and Bleeding Damage are added in full from the first charge. This percentage scaling also works on all abilities that use lightning and bleeding regardless of X% weapon damage on those specific abilities, as long as you have that one charge.

This also, of course, includes abilities that proc off of gear and devotions.
