This is coming from some1 who’s playing on steam but seeing as how GoG has better sales than steam sometimes I’m considering gifting the game to a few friends of mine through GoG this x-mass.
So is there cross-“platform” support?

No, there isn’t. It says quite clearly on the GOG website that the game can’t be cross played with Steam users.
"Multiplayer Notice: Please note that the GOG Galaxy Client is required to access Multiplayer.
Multiplayer available only between GOG.com users."
Galaxy is near perfect now. So Steam does not want to share: if Steam let to crossplay with Galaxy, everybody will go to Galaxy and let down Steam.
