Cannot launch the game after v1.3.0.1 hotfix on Linux

Game could be launched on v1.3.0.0 but after the hot fix it keeps giving this error
“Game requires steam. Please launch the application from the steam interface”
(I always launch the game from steam)
Validating game file integrity did not solve the issue

Worked around this by going into the game settings on steam → Compatibility → change the proton version from 9 to “hotfix” version
(This was not necessary for the 1.3.0.0 release)

Edit: since this keeps getting quoted, please try other versions like Proton 11/10 too; 11 works for me

You really shouldn’t be using Proton 9 or Hotfix for that matter. Hotfix is only for issues with specific games on launch day, and 9 is ancient. Experimental is (usually) the best option.

Also works with Proton 11.0. 10.x will launch but it was not able to load (or locate?) my save data.

Experimental is the worst option from experience, so many games in my library simply refuse to work with it. Had to force 9 on all of them.

Also I retested and hotfix/experimental launch the game but it just black screen constantly (things worked fine yesterday on proton 9)

Proton-GE user here since version 9. Never had a problem launching the game.

What GPU do you have? If it’s an older NVIDIA without driver support, it might be missing some Vulkan extensions needed by newer Proton versions. Most people don’t have issues with Experimental from what I can tell.

Nvm this; the issue with every proton above 9 is that it will black screen when I tab out; I’ll look into the driver issue maybe

This was the fix for me.

For anyone curious I was able to get the game running, with all my saves using any of the following:

• Proton v11.1, v11.2, and v11.3
• Proton-GE
• Cachyos-proton v11.1, v11.2, and v11.3

Was not able to run with:

• v10.32, v10.33, or v10.34
• 9.0

Any version not listed I did not test.

EDIT: 26-07-26 Sunday evening, looks like a small patch may have gone out I can’t find anything on the forums. But afterwards the cachyos versions or Proton stopped working, with this message “Game requires steam. Please launch the application from the steam interface.” So far as I can tell no other changes from above. Proton-GE versions 11.0 and up all seem to work(silly me for forgetting to switch off of the cachyos versions for when I was testing yesterday.

I had same issue after 1.3.0.1 Hotfix 1. Going to compatibility and forcing Proton version (11.0) resolved the issue.

Had no problem with Proton GE before but this update broke it.
Getting “Grim Dawn requires Steam. Please launch the application from the Steam interface” while launching. The reason I didn’t use official Steam Proton is sound effects caused massive stutters.

I have been playtesting FoA on Linux using Proton: experimental and it has been and is still working with the latest GD hotfix. (This does not mean Crate is supporting GD on Linux officially. I have been a longtime playtester and was forced to switch to Linux last year.)

I am using a ten years old PC with a new Radeon graphics card and have upgraded to Ubuntu 26.04, when it came out.

As I am rather new to Linux I cannot provide any troubleshooting tips, but I suspect you are facing a local issue or a general one with your Linux distribution.

Edit: Unless it can be reproduced on Windows…

Cannot launch the game after v1.3.0.1 hotfix on Windos11

After updating to 1.3.0.1, this error pops up every time I start the game, but everything was fine before: “Grim Dawn requires Steam. Please launch the application from the Steam interface!” Things I’ve tried: verifying files, full reinstall, /x86 /x64, running as admin, clearing cache, disabling antivirus — none worked. My other Steam games run fine. People on Linux have reported the same bug (it works if you switch Proton), but there’s no solution yet on Windows.

I’m running it on PikaOS (Debian) and CachyOS (Arch) and it works fine on both using the CachyOS Proton.

I’ve noticed over the years that generally Linux wine/proton issues tend to actually relate to an underlying Windows issue, but are less noticeable on Windows probably due to other features/components/dlls installed that hide it.

I had the same issue, proton-experimental, fixed it. But, i’m on Linux Mint, if that helps.

Found a solution for myself, maybe this will help others with the same circumstances:
For me, prior to the recent hotfix, GD would only work with Proton 8.0.5 or 9.04. Anything later resulted in a black screen. After the hotfix, 9.0.4 started giving me the “Grim Dawn requires Steam” message, with the fix seeming to be for people to switch to a newer Proton version (either 11 or experimental). For anybody that used to use 9.0.4 because the game wouldn’t start on newer versions, try using Proton 11 and use the launch option PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

I think for some setups like mine, for whatever reason, the game doesn’t play nice with DXVK and you need to use the OpenGL renderer instead. With Proton 11 and the launch option, the game runs just like it did before and all my saves/DLC are there

Nevermind - shutting down and restarting computer fixed it for me.
