I wanted to give my roommate some stuff from my toon, so i backed up the character. We play LAN games.
After giving him the stuff my toon is still missing it, even after restoring the old folder.

Sounds like you are using cloud save, with local saves that is pretty much impossible…
not using cloud. turned that off a year ago.
and now it’s doing something really weird, i can DELETE a toon folder. Go into Grim Dawn and it’s gone. Then close Grim Dawn, PUT THE TOON FOLDER BACK. Then go into game and character is still missing!

figured it out. for some idiotic reason the game had two versions of this character, one was _Mauth and one was __Mauth. the __Mauth is a dead folder that serves no purpose at all.
i backed up the wrong one
The folder with the two underscores is the backup in case you uninstall AoM it will that one to allow you to play vanilla GD.
The folder with one underscore is used for GD with AoM.
