So I’m wondering about a few class combinations that I want to ask if they would work. Yes, I know there’s the build compendium, but how good are these combinations?
I know demo and nightblade make an awesome elemental dualwield build, I think occu+witch-hunter makes for a few good poison, bleed or similar builds and Demo shaman can probably make for a lightning build of some kind. Shaman nightblade can do dualwield lightning and probably a few more too
It really depends on what build you’re trying to make. Mastery choice is secondary to the build idea.
Like any Occultist/x can work if you look at it from a summoning angle, but trying to make a Dreeg’s Evil Eye poison/acid build using Occulist/Demo is not something I’d recommend.
Nightblade only get Dual Blades as a skill, no mastery gets dual pistols out of the box but there are various ways to add this ability to your character
Occultist+Demo - usually is used for ranged attack characters (both dual-wield and 2-handed)
Occultist+Nightblade - usually is used for poison/acid builds (DW melee, caster or hybrid)
Demo+Nightblade - usually is used for DW melee builds (fire+lightning-based, or pierce)
Nightblade+Shaman - not sure about this one.
Demo+Shaman - probably should be used as lightning caster.
I can speak to trickster (shaman/nightblade) at least a little
I’ve done bleed and lightning with trickster (in 1.0.0.7) and I liked both but I found bleed to be more enjoyable if slightly difficult to use against resistant enemies and RR has been nerfed since then. If I want to do lightning I go 2hander with stormreaver and if bleed, dual wield with bloodsong and brutallax.
Trickster’s most obvious strength is savagery+dw skills but it can be built for ranged attacker as well if you try ranged primal strike or ranged blade burst. I found the performance on ranged a bit lackluster but I didn’t put much effort into that variant.
I’m working on a Trickster build right now. The Trickster is definitely one of the least-used classes, since I assume most people don’t expect a class that focuses on 2-handed melee weapons to mesh with the one class that focuses on dual-wielding melee. I’m sure those same people don’t see how combining those two classes can produce an absurdly tanky/lethal caster build, either.
I haven’t unlocked elite/ultimate for my Trickster character yet, but I have a build that’s doing amazing work in Veteran. Essentially, I’m following the same general principles as JoV’s PB Witch Hunter build, but using the Shaman’s Grasping Vines+Devouring Swarm instead of the Occultist’s Curse of Frailty.
I think one of the amazing things about Grim Dawn’s classes is that they can potentially share at least one damage type with any other class. I mean, sometimes certain combos will pigeonhole a character into one playstyle (e.g. trying to make a 2handed melee build with the Warlock might give you a bit of trouble) but there is always at least 1 solid, viable build for all hybrid classes.
What I’m trying to say is that pretty much every hybrid class can be considered good in its own way - what really counts is where you invest your points.
