I object to the classification of Dungeon Lords as a game.
It’s a good game, it’s just plagued with bugs. If you can manage to save every 5 minutes just in case you run into a game breaking issue, it can be somewhat enjoyable. Played it in co-op about a year ago, despite having to redo certain areas several times which really ticked me off (hours of work had to be redone), the game wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. Playing the steam version helps as you will experience less bugs…But there’s still many.
That said, I don’t think I’d ever want to play it again. But IMO it is highly underrated, mostly because it was unplayable for a time lol
Good to see that i’m not alone with that
Frankly, I’m confused. You don’t seem to see Oblvion, Morrowind, Skyrim, Two Worlds, Reckoning: Kingdoms of Amalur, etc, as ARPGs yet include Titan Quest and Grim Dawn, Sacred, etc. All rely on quests, some sort of storyline and loot, only difference may be the amount of foes you face at any one time.
ARPG is just a subset of RPG, no real difference at all so just call them what they are - RPGs.
Otherwise we get into the stupid situation of calling a plumber a sanitation expert.
You should look again at first post, as there is the “definition” of what makes a ARPG from the point of view of the OP:
Some may describe ARPG.
Some may describe his ideal HnS.
Some can’t describe anything (like the criteria on character customization where you should be able to customize but it’s also OK if you can’t).
Hence the strange classification.
True this, because that’s what an ARPG is all about. I mean, people can come up with so many names to label even the same thing. And if I go for games similar to Titan Quest, and ask people to recommend it to me Dark Souls is not what I want, nor is the same thing in terms of game-play. So, you got it right, ARPG games only in Diablo vein.
ARPG games are mostly isometric, who cares, if they are not then they are hybrid, depending on how developed - take for example Hellgate - London.
Because, someone asks you: “Hey, I wanna try out an ARPG similar to Grim Dawn.” Do you recommend Path Of Exile or Dark Souls? Because I don’t think Dark Souls is what he’s looking for.
I’ve seen other people in posts below yours saying Sacred 3 is not an ARPG. Will be removed from the list.
Diablo started ARPG era, and defined it, and this list is about ARPG games, thus similar to Diablo.
No, I haven’t played them.
Dynasty Warriors is an Action game. Simply that.
Dark Souls is way much closer to Oblivion and Skyrim, than any ARPG from this list. I mean, I can’t give any more valid explanation than the very game itself. Words are unnecessary. These games speak it themselves.
Yes, Diablo defined it, others should follow, make variations and innovations. With your logic Age Of Mythology and Dota 2 are the same genre.
ARPG.
I hope you don’t consider neither of them as an ARPG.
And that is just one drop in the sea of differences between an ARPG and RPG game.
Because - Grim Dawn, you can’t customize your character… because - Wolcen - Lords Of Mayhem, you can customize your character. Both are an ARPG. Magic.
ARPG.[/QUOTE]
Mind blown. Here I thought I had a grasp on this definition too.

If your criteria to define a game as an arpg says “it’s fine either way”, then it’s not a criteria and there is no point adding it to the list. Magic.
And still, diablo-like games are arpg but arpg are not diablo-like games.
This is not a list of my favourite games, nor “I think this is that”, but what things really are. Google “difference between ARPG and MMORPG” and visit all Reddit, Steam and other forums and read peoples’ opinions. That’s how I summed up this “criteria”.
Funny thing is, while it’s hard for people to distinguish an ARPG from an MMORPG, because technically there is no difference in combat style, and character development, people here are comparing Grim Dawn to Dark Souls.
Ah, well, maybe someone will show up claiming Fifa and Pes are ARPG games, because they are full of action, and you know, have role-playing elements, like choosing your team(class), selection your formation(skill tree) selecting player positions(skill allocation), etc.
True, mr. Captain Obvious.
Contradiction.
Ok, then make it simple.
Drop all games out except Diablo self, Throne of Darkness, Sacred 1, Legend-Hand of God, TQ and Grim Dawn …finished.
Now you have your complete oldstyle game-list.
All others would not match your definition, at best maybe as hybrid.
Or lets do it at 2 examples with your own definition
Red= Diablo III
Yellow= Hellgate:London
What makes an arpg in my opinion:
-ARPG - type of role playing games with constant action (battle), less relying on story, dialogue and quests themselves, unlike pure RPG. ++
-3rd person camera, often with miniature characters, with or without dedicated camera rotation, with or without dedicated zoom. ++
-They are almost always point and click, but very few have keyboard movement WASD. ++
-You often get to choose character’s gender, appearance for more immersion, but not always, since not all the games should be stereotypically done in the same fashion. Sometimes you already play as a defined protagonist. Also, some classes may be gender locked. ++
-You have prominent health and energy bars, prominent skill slots, skill tree, gather experience points in order to level up, freely choose to invest points in personal attributes. ++
-You are free to choose your own class, and freely invest points in skill trees provided by a mastery/class. ++
-You choose your class, tend to make it viable and effective in combat on your own, and always look for good loot/equipment. ++
-Unlike in an RPG, where you deal with targets each individually, opponents in an ARPG are regarded as a mob, not individuals. ++
-You are able to play the game in single player, while multiplayer is an additional option. -+
-The game may or may not require constant internet connection. If it does, and you don’t depend on other players during game-play, and are able to play single player content, it still makes it an ARPG, not an MMORPG. -+
-The game may be a fusion of diverse game genres, but the most dominant one is an ARPG element. ++
-May contain non-traditional features like rolling, jumping, maybe even manual block. ++
And now tell me your logic
Skyrim wishes it was anything like Dark Souls. The two really aren’t comparable (and neither, for that matter, are Oblivion and /Souls). The souls games are a quintessential part of ARPGs. Hell, even Wikipedia gets it right for once.
Not to mention that /Souls meets literally all your criteria for belonging on your list, other than having a lack of skilltrees, which I wouldn’t consider a necessity of ARPGs to begin with. I’m getting the impression you’ve never played /Souls either…
So, basically you started pointing out something obvious. Thanks Captain Obvious. It is on the list, no one here said it shouldn’t be. It’s a hybrid, because it’s an ARPG and RPG.
Let me make this easier for you:
Titan Quest - Immortal Throne (ARPG)
Grim Dawn (ARPG)
Path Of Exile (ARPG)
Hellgate - London (ARPG, RPG)
What was your point by the way? Lol!
And here, you claim you can’t play Diablo in single player. Lolz. XD
There you have it, in a nutshell.
