Confusing Mechanics

Okay, so I’ve played grim dawn for quite a while now and I still don’t fully understand some parts of the game

Does " Adds X Elemental damage " work on my spells? - Yes, but only if they have a weapon damage component to them?

Only 1 instance of each elemental reduction time can be used at a time and something like " The Viper " Constellation doesn’t specifically state how the % Reduction applies. But it only applies on abilities with a % Weapon damage component and the effective reduction will only apply its full value at 100% weapon damage decreasing as weapon% goes lower. So 50% weapon damage would only apply 10% of the 20% Total value Correct?

Something like, the Panetti’s Replicating Missile line has rather non synergistic properties to it for example - Main skill, Flat elemental damage. Second skill % Fire damage (Why %Fire?), then Lightning and then Aether. Does the % Elemental damage apply to the fragments launched from the Aether damage part? OR are they completely seperate entities in terms of damage and need to be scaled seperately. Therefore does that mean to get a true synergy for all parts of Panetti’s I would need to use %All Damage and not % Elemental damage etc?

Why does curse of frailty agro above even my pets " Agro " Abilities ?

Perhaps a sticky in a very visible or high traffic part of the forum that explains all the simple stuff so that someone can just glance at it and jump right in knowing exactly what they’re doing. Or even adding some of these explanations in game, or having a button in game that links u to the explanations. People won’t go and read each individual formula if they’re like myself which would probably be majority of players, just some more clear explanations on how things which long time players take for granted function would be great.

Sorry for the ugly presentation

Edit - I read a post recently stating % elemental types (Fire, Lightning, Cold) would now effect their counterparts Burn/Electroctute/Frostburn is that accurate or not? Or are they also seperate damage types?

Hi,

no offend but first of all you really should read the Official Guide which is linked from the Option Menu ingame. This way you should at least understand what is meant by Elemental Damage and what is the difference between Flat and +x% damage.

Nevertheless a few things i can answer directly:

“Does " Adds X Elemental damage " work on my spells? - Yes, but only if they have a weapon damage component to them?”

Yes! Because every flat damage is only working on your weapon (explained in the official Guide)

Panetti’s: Elemental damage is improving only Fire, Lightning and Cold damage. To get a buff for the Aetherial damage you have to wear +x% Aetherial or +x% alldamage (which is obvisiously the better choice). Or you have to get some form of transformating like “x% Aetherial is transformed to elemental damage” (not quite sure if something like this is in the game).

And btw. there are several stickys in the Forum for game mechanics :stuck_out_tongue: One of them is: http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23720

Hope i could help.

Hey mate, that still doesn’t really make something in game for people to see while choosing devotions or abilities. Again for example the Viper, simply stating that it will reduce a targets resistance by 20% doesn’t really help anyone out. It doesn’t say next to it " Only applies with Weapon Damage and has reduced effectiveness under 100% weapon damage ". IT simply states that it reduces resistances. How the bugger is someone supposed to automatically know that ? Or memorise the entire game guide? Also not sure it’s clear cut in the game guide that’s exactly how that constellation works.

Of course there are a lot more examples here but that’s the best one I can think of right now that’s obviously worded poorly.

Edit - Panetti’s is another good example here, if u take a constellation that applies Flat Elemental damage like 44-67 and Panetti’s is listed as " 177 elemental damage " would the obvious assumption not be that it would apply? When in actuality it doesn’t :/.

Usually the word “attack” (such in the context: % of Attack Damage converted to Health) is used to mean any ability which deals damage, while “attack” is infrequently meant to mean what you do with your weapon. It’s the language that’s confusing.

Here’s some quotes from the Game Guide (http://www.grimdawn.com/guide/gameplay/combat.php) that I find at best ambivalent:

“Percent of Attack Damage Converted to Health is a form of life steal available in Grim Dawn. It functions differently depending on whether you find it on equipment or on a skill. When on equipment, life steal applies only to your weapon attacks. If you use a skill with % Weapon Damage, that component of the skill benefit from the life steal.”
What “component” of that skill?
“When found on a skill, Percent of Attack Damage Converted to Health applies to all of that skill’s direct damage.”
So not to just a component of it?

“Each of these abilities has a chance to activate, which is displayed as a percentage. What that means is that on every basic attack you do, you will have a chance of using the ability instead.”
So the passive skill is used instead of the weapon attack?
Most of these are worded as if they would augment the attacks, not replace them. Confusing.
Also confusing is what counts as a “basic attack”, and if those passive skills can also be used with them.

It’s also not clear as to how Area of Effect skills or skills which deal direct damage over time (not DoT, I mean more than once) do or do not apply To-Hit rolls, and when they do so.

Mostly, however, it’s the way things are worded or not worded that I find confusing

@soulcry: I’m absolutely with you that GD could use a few more ingame explanations.

You can see a few things by attacking the Dummys which are in every town. I test something like your described example with Panettis with Damage Numbers “On” in the options.
Furthermore i use the ingame Tooltips for the left and right mousebutton.

You know that the tooltip is dynamic? (It is comparing DPS on weapons dependent on which skill you have right at that moment on your left or right MB).

In comparison to Diablo 3 it is giving a lot of informations
