Crate Entertainment Talks About Grim Dawn 2 Plans

Wow. Does it matter? I think Crate has demonstrated they know how to manage the resources they have to make two games, and some more on the horizon.

The money they made from GD gave them resources to make FF and start on another game.

Seems like they know what they are doing.

GD doesn’t need relaunching, it’s sales have been good for years.

And where do you think the money to fund FF came from? Sales of GD.

Any GD2 is years away yet. A new generation of Crate’s game engine is under development and that will be used first for their RTS game. After that then maybe we’ll get GD2.

I hope I won’t offend anyone, I bought FF, but for me this purchase was like buying a loyalist pack

Same for me personally as I’ve never been into city builders ever since the Sim City days. Just never really been my thing. That being said I’ll always buy whatever they release to support them as I feel they deserve it. Thee are very few studios I still believe in like that. Crate, Larian, and 11th Hour are the few such studios left that I hope continue their quality over corporate soulless greed. And by corporate soulless greed I mean $70-100 box cost, plus season pass cost, plus cash shop, plus paid expansions. And despite all that games with all that their quality is far below studios like Crate and their more customer friendly cheaper pricing models. Give me good games and I’ll give you more money than those other greedy dev’s could ever hope to make nickel and diming me every step of the way.

No FF wouldn’t exist without Grim Dawn and there is no disputing that. Every single game Crate has in development is because of Grim Dawn’s success and all the money customers spent buying GD and it’s expansions and loyalist packs. Be happy Grim Dawn exists, and be happier Grim Dawn 2 might eventually come. Because Current Grim Dawn is paying for your favorite Crate Game, and countless other games in the future that are yet to be released. GD 2 will likely pay for games Crate hasn’t even imagined making yet. FF is likely not paying for GD 2 or anything else other than maybe it’s own future development.

looks like you might have glossed over this

First would FF exist if Grim Dawn wasn’t made? We both know the answer to that.

Second Steam charts.

Grim Dawn Players
All Time Peak - 61,093
Last 24hours - 2,573
Current - 1,535

Farthest Frontier Players
All Time Peak - 24,874
Last 24hours - 1,363
Current - 748

While they haven’t released sales numbers exactly of each, you can’t tell me that FF has sold more units in 2 years or whatever than Grim Dawn and all of it’s expansions did in 10. The steam chart All Time Peak kind of proves that point. And this also doesn’t count consoles of which I don’t think FF has been released on any console yet (my apologies if I am wrong). Now the only thing possible that could be is that FF reached certain sales and player milestones quicker than Grim Dawn did. That I can absolutely believe because support for Grim Dawn in the early days with only 1 or 2 acts in early release was slim compared to when full launch happened. Whereas FF A LOT of Grim Dawn fans bought it right away in early release just to support Crate, due to their reputation and satisfaction of Grim Dawn, whether they like that city builder style of game or not (myself included).

irrelevant to the notion of whether future projects is paid for by GD or FF/“FF only paying for itself and nothing else”
weird af shift you’re trying to make there

completely irrelevant to anything going on here, that’s some serious clutching

i can’t, and i’m not

FF has sold about 2 million copies i think it was
GD has sold 6mill? i think was the last mention (and that included expansions iirc?)
re-quote from Medea(unsure where she got the the quote from):
“Grim Dawn has gone to sell over 3 million copies of the base game and over 4 million units of DLC on PC.”
^that was summer 2023

totally, and that is also likely what zantai did say
but, there is still a key aspect you’re totally ignoring, and that is FF has clearly already sold well, and:

so maybe try to not dismiss what FF is bringing to the table as much as you’re doing? it’s kinda that simple
you have basically nothing indicating dev statement wise that the company is fueled by and running “solely” on GD revenue and that GD “and GD alone” will fund future projects - it’s some serious speculation pulling out that butt while somehow also attempting to diminish FF accomplishment,
which is just silly on top, if anything you too should be appreciating FF did as well as it’s done so far; because it means Crate stays open for business and can do all their fun stuff

It wasn’t enough backseat game developers dictating how the game should be balanced, now we have backseat business managers

Iirc that all time peak for GD was when people could play it for free over one weekend some years ago so that’s not really a measure to go by.

I wish they could just build up on GD1 instead of a GD2. My problem with all these games is people asking for sequels 5 or 6 months after the launch of a game. If they wanted to they could make more DLCs for this game but the playerbase wants sequels all the time.

not sure what “all these games” are, but it can’t be Grim Dawn. The game has been out for over 8 years, and I don’t recall anyone asking for GD2 in 2016.
People started asking for a sequel after the release of AoM, and more after FG, but people also always asked for yet another expansion pack. And because Crate is Crate, we are gonna get both another xpac and a sequel

I’m not sure if I like the idea of changes to a consolidated game which, in my opinion, is in great shape right now
I have to stop playing the only shooter I’ve ever played because the new direction they took
I left my main game, a mmo, about a year ago after what I consider a terrible expansion, and updates to old content which ruined the lore, and fun for me
The game I’m currently playing in its place, a mmo, just released what I think it’s an atrocious expansion after probably the best story I’ve ever played, and once again to top it all, awful changes to the only class I like
After that, the idea that Grim Dawn may be changing things in a major way is concerning, I hope I’m wrong

Found some new comments on the GD facebook page.

Holy fuck, usually indie game teams these days don’t bother making their own engines for 3d projects, simply because it’s a fuckload of work and often “bug prone”. But I guess FF and GD have sold well enough to fund such a crazy idea and available engines couldn’t meet their needs with out a considerable amount of tweaking.

Wonder if it’ll be as flexible as the old C&C Generals one though? That allowed you to turn units inside out :stuck_out_tongue:

So 5 years later we have some news  How long would it take to cook? Another 3, maybe 4, so GD2 on december 2028?

Building something from scratch takes a lot of time and they’re working on a bunch of other big projects, while their studio isn’t all that big. So if they work on FoA till 2026, then I doubt they’ll be done with GD2 in 2 years. Maybe 2030?

2033/4 would be my guess.

That’s nice. I honestly didn’t think the engine would be done already.
