Crucible Characters from main game

Hi all,
Quick question. Can you use your characters from the main game and use them in the crucible? Or do you have to make new characters from scratch? Thanks!

I guess my next question would be how to use my characters from main game? They do not pop up in the crucible character select. I am running the game through gog galaxy. Maybe i need a fresh install?
