Damage type question

Are acid damage and poison damage the same thing? Or is poison damage a DoT from acid damage. I want to know if I increase poison damage if it will increase the damage of acid attacks.

They’re different from an output standpoint (damage modifiers), same from an input standpoint (resistance).

You can verify easily by checking your character sheet, page 2 for damage. Acid damage modifiers are different from poison, so the answer to your immediate question is “no”. Boosting poison damage/duration does not improve acid damage or vice versa. From an offensive standpoint you have to focus on the two separately. From a defensive (resistance) standpoint, they’re kind of the same.

Boosting poison/acid resistance does help you protect against both acid and poison.
Boosting poison damage only improves poison damage and not acid.
Boosting acid damage only improves acid damage and not poison.

Poison is kind of like acid over time (except boosting acid damage is not going to improve poison damage over time). At least that’s the way the game seems to consolidate poison and acid from a resistance standpoint, kind of like it consolidates fire resistance (immediate) and burn resistance (DoT) together as one single resistance idea, but from an output (offensive) standpoint they’re totally different damage types.

I feel like I confuse myself sometimes the more I attempt to explain the mechanics. It’s like piercing and bleeding don’t fit along any of the rest. They’re different even from a resistance standpoint. But poison and acid are kind of different but same. Different for offense, same for resistance. I guess it is to prevent people’s heads from exploding if there were 17 different types of damage to balance our resistances against and not just 11, but maybe 17 different damage types is not overwhelming from an offensive standpoint to excel in since you don’t have to (and generally don’t want to) excel in all of them. You can excel in dealing Acid damage but not Poison, or vice versa, just as you can excel in lightning but not electrocution.

Dot vs flat scale with their respective bonuses and do not share those.

It’s the same as the elemental damage types. Fire damage bonuses are separate from Burning damage bonuses, but fire resistance protexts against both.

Ok I got it

Acid is the raw damage and poison is the DoT damage. It’s the same as Fire being the raw damage and Burn being the DOT damage.
