Deceiver builds?

Just started my first HC character, and had the impulse to make a deceiver (inquisitor/occultist). I didn’t really see any other talk of the character on the forums and was wondering what people thought?

(I’m really early, still just act 1 and basically spamming storm box to level right now). The only obvious synergy I can see is if you go tainted flame and get chaos/vit damage on flames of ignaffer

Deceiver is solid because both classes have ridiculous RR options. Elemental damage would actually have the largest potential because it’s the only RR that both classes have, and they stack. Downside to the class is that Occultist has limited defensive options so you’ll be on the squishier side. Here’s a few options you can do…

  • Caster approach with Rune spam + Sigil + Doom Bolt. There’s several modifiers that turn Sigil and Doom Bolt into Elemental based damage, and several gears that convert Vitality to Fire/Elemental. Downside is that because you can kite (which you should), using Inquisitor Seal will be kind of wonky. You won’t have access to a lot of defensive abilities, which will make you squishy.

  • Elemental Gunslinger or Skirmisher (gun/shield). You have access to probably the most Flat Elemental damage of any class combo in the game (Inquisitor WPS + Arcane Empowerment + Ranged Expertise + Storm Spirit + Hellfire) and you can also get up to 30% attack speed from Ranged Expertise + Witchfire. Aura of Censure and Inquisitor Seal work well with this. Downside again is the squishiness, but you can use Raven’s Heal to help a little and possibly Hellhound to tank (or use a shield). You could also use Blood Orb of Ch’thon to convert all that Elemental into Chaos.

  • Pet builds are a possible option, as Inquisitor has many abilities that are pet friendly (Word of Renewal, Inquisitor Seal, Aura of Conviction, etc.).

Here’s mine right now.
I tried chaos Ignaffar, I tried chaos Word of Pain with Blood Orb of Chthon but there just isn’t enough gear support for chaos inquisitor (and most of it is for Purifier, do you believe that?) so I went with the good ol’ Obisidian Juggernaut and it’s pulling decent dps and good ADCtH.

Playing on hardcore so I tried to make it very tanky and it’s been working fine so far.

I’d go for 1h melee (turned to a red sword with illusionist) with orb of cthon for Inquisitor Creed cosplay. It would win Grim Dawn on looks alone. The things he says, the rituals he performs, guy is 100% a Deceiver.

+1. For a guy who supposedly does not embrace the void he seemed to have an awful lot of knowledge and an awfully easy time with Ch’thonic rituals.

What would be the best way to level one, WoP or DEE I guess?

Pet build sounds interesting but how does that scale past normal difficulty?

Deceivers are surprisingly good summoners because of flat damage and because the rune of Hagarrad modifier biting cold delivers a big debuff to mob defensive ability.

I’ve started work on a converted Deceiver myself using Ignaffar’s, which I know is tough, but there is a bit of gear late game to assist:

The one thing I want to know is if by converting the fire and lighting damage, if the burn damage remains, because in that case you can use the Infernal Knight’s set, Pagar’s Betrayal and Hellscourge for some impressive Chaos and burn damage.

Will wait to see how this works in practice, and how that compares to my dual-wield Pyromancer.

If you use the blood orb to convert elemental to chaos the elemental dot remains since there is no chaos dot. So either convert skills that don’t have a dot like word of pain or like you said use gear that supports both.

This is what I have so far for a leveling build. No idea really what to do on devotions, I’m just dumping points into whatever gives elemental damage. Basic idea is to use word of pain for DPS, shield for survivability since I’m playing on hardcore (and turtle devotion to help). I use energy potions fairly frequently, but it’s not too bad. They aren’t that expensive.

So far it’s been fine for veteran, though a bit slow for certain bosses. The -resist from occultist is quite good, I’m probably going to go for the inquisitor exclusive that gives even more -elemental damage.

When maxed out I’ve thought about converting to a chaos based build and using inquisitor more for the rr for chaos, but elemental is quite strong. Enchanted Flint is pretty crazy for the build, giving +100% fire damage early on.

I’m a bit torn on whether to put more points in word of renewal or get blood of dreeg or rush straight for Aura of Censure for more damage.

Here’s my conversion FoI Deceiver. I cleared Ultimate. Some bosses have too much life steal resistance sadly to make this really stand out.

Thanks to everyone for the ideas here!

I recently began a HC Deceiver (2H-Ranged, Fire/Electricity) and I’m having a blast so far, literally. I was thinking about going fo Aether/Chaos or maybe Aether/Electricity later on, depending on what gear I find.

What’s the best skill to use for a RR focused deceiver? You can easily get -60% elemental RR. 30% from aura of censure and another 30% for CoF.

I’ve been doing word of pain but I’m a bit worried that won’t scale well into ultimate, but the only skill of inquisitor/occultist that does mainhand damage + elemental is FoI and that tops out at 24%. In theory any of inquisitor skills would work for this, but I dunno which is the best choice.

I’ve killed Cronley in Elite and so far the damage doesn’t really feel lacking, but the survivability does. Inquisitor’s seal is still good but will fall off later and blood of dreeg + word of renewal are more burst heal than anything else. Especially because aura of censure needs you to stand somewhat close to the enemies, which is fine if you’re kiting them but can get a bit tense if stunned.

:undecided:I think if you eat your Wheaties before a big fight you will survive.

without gear the only ‘good’ build is rune caster imo. don’t think it’s too great for pets esp w/o gear and for vitality for chaos builds you really need conversion gear for them to do anything

http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74092 chaos runes!

besides the various flames of igna builds which are good you can also use the harbinger set for chaos auto attacker+huge doombolt hits. there’s 1-2 good harbinger builds posted if u look around
