Defeat the Avatar of Mogdrogen in elite with full cunning blademaster

After died like 20+ times, I finally managed to kill this guy in elite mode. Ok, I know that there is a thread about a Chinese player killed the ultimate Mogdrogen in a toe to toe combat, but unfortunately I am not even able to figure out how to tank him all the way in elite. So I used some safer tactic to fight him.

First, let’s take a look at Mogdrogen’s skill.

Summon Briarthorn Terror
Summon Frosthide Chilltusk
Summon Boneback
Lightning Shield
Lightning Storm
Lightning Bolt Volley
Lightning Strike

Summoning mobs is not a big problem for me as I need mobs to restore health(% DPS converts to health), if there are no mobs or I killed them too fast, I would most likely die in secs as lifeleach/steal is not working on Mogdrogon.

The lightning skills are his main dps skills, which petty hurt. I kept getting one shot before changing my build in order to survive. As I don’t find any description about Mogdrogon’s skill, below figures are just based on the visual inspection in actual combat.

With around 200%+ lightning resistance, the maximum damage(might be crit) I get is:
Lightning Bolt Volley(5 lightning bolts):4k~5k
Lightning Strike:9k
Lightning Storm: DOT 2.5k per second
Lightning Strike of the Lightning Storm:6k

It turns out there is another lightning strike at the end of the lightning storm, hitting the target in the center of the storm. And this is actually the reason why I kept getting one shot, because I was not killed by a single lightning strike, instead I was killed by a combo:2 lightning strike at the same time. So the safer tactic is to not stay in the middle of the lightning storm.

So why am I able to tank him before 50% of his HP? This brings in his another skill: Lighting Shield. In elite mode, after he loses 50% hp, he will cast this skill. It is like the second phase. From my understanding, this is some sort of buff, giving him + %DA/resistance and + casting speed + % lightning damage, which is obvious. I died 5,6 times after his 50%hp when tanking him, and they are pretty much all one shot(standing in the middle of the storm). I simply felt a lot damage pressure with this toe to toe way. So I give up, that’s how I came up with the tactic showing in the video:

Tank him until 50% hp, and then keep the distance, making him cast lightning storm which is away from him, and go back to him, DPS, run away before next lightning storm.

Below are my status/build especially for this fight.

  1. 200%+ lighting resistance
  2. 60%+ avoid projectiles
I used to think that % avoid projectiles does not apply to spell, but it turns out that there is huge difference between stacking this or not. I tried to use 4 Deathmarked Set + Reaver’s Claw before using all Deathmarked, I took way more damage than wearing the full set, ex. taking 6k+ from lightning bolt volley. I was not even able to be alive to his 30% hp. And I don’t think that +10% physical resistance is ever the case, as Mogdrogon seems to only cast spell.
  3. 76% stun resistance
Very important, because lightning damage usually stun target. When stunned, you are not able to attack and use any skill, which means you don’t restore hp, then you will die eventually.
  4. 10k hp
This is the minimum hp that would make you survive, as a crit lightning strike usually takes 9k5. When I was fighting him with 9k2, I died a lot due to this short of hp, just one shot.

Gears:
deathmarked set
lifegiver x2
peerless eye
great pretty pants
blade break sash
grasp of unchained might
golemborn greaves
mark of dark dreams.

As for ultimate, I tried couple of runs, died when tanking him for 2 minutes. Simply more damage and more health, but that doesn’t mean impossible. I will be working on it next.
I am pretty sure that there are a lot stuff I don’t know, some of my point might not be correct. Feel free to advice and correct me, all discussion are welcome.

Yep, I figured this out the hard way as well. Underneath the storm you take substantially more damage and there’s a chance he will perform a perma-stun on your toon.
