For something so specific, that really seems like something a mod should do rather than a baseline feature.
You could for example make a mod that gives all weapons attribute or level requirements so high that no character can ever equip them. Then you can loot them without worrying about them getting equipped.
Experience.
But do You know that many games let You disable that GREAT feature like auto equip items? Thats not something odd.
About the time to code it⌠I know itâs just a few lines in the code, just maybe 15 minutes if the game is coded rightâŚ

You said yourself in the first post that this is just for a challenge so itâs not something you would do on your normal characters right? Then having 1 character for this mod shouldnât be an issue. Itâs either that or you work around it like by not picking up weapons and selling everything else like me or medea suggested.
