I’m following a character guide that suggests both factions are good to gain rep with, but is it possible to do that? Or is it like choosing between Kymon’s Chosen and the Order?

No, you can side with both. Outcast quests give a reduction in Black Legion Reputation but it’s easily recoverable.

Yes it is possible to gain reputation with both - Black Legion and Outcast fractions.
You need to remember that completing quests from Anasteria (not from Outcast’s bounty table) will reduce your reputation in Black Legion by ~200 points, see http://grimdawn.wikia.com/wiki/The_Outcast for details.
As for Black Legion - complete the quests except killing Anasteria and quests from bounty table to gain reputation, see http://grimdawn.wikia.com/wiki/The_Black_Legion for details.
P.S: Use documents Writs and Mandates from fraction store (available on the 3rd and 4rth reputation levels) to increase gaining fraction reputation.

Other way around.
You can’t do Outcast quests without lowering BL rep. But BL quests have no impact on the Outcast (other than choosing to kill the Outcast).
Looks like I was not accurate in wording and it caused a little mess. Ceno, thank you for clarifying JohnJSal’s concern regarding BL’s bounty quests.
It’s like everyone here already said, you will degrade Black Legion reputation if you do quests and bounties for the Outcast, but doing quests and bounties for the Black Legion has no consequence on Outcast reputation. (lorewise it’s because she doesn’t have any grudge against them, even if they do not trust her)
So the trick to get reputation with both is to do everything the Black Legion has to offer in the quest/bounty department (except killing her), and for the Outcast do only her quests and avoid her bounties, because you can also get reputation with her by killing both Aetherial and Chtonian enemies, which are the most common enemies in the game.
Hmm, any advice on what to do? Does the Outcast faction offer anything good for a Warder?
I don’t like the idea of locking out a faction, so I may just befriend Anasteria. But how do you gain Outcast rep without messing up BL rep?

As far as I remember Outcast’s bounties won’t degrade Black Legion reputation. I checked several quests from Outcast’s bounty table like delivering rare components, creating relics and did not get any Black Legion reputation penalties. According to the Wiki other Outcast quests from the bounty table also won’t effect on Black Legion reputation.
Really? Because I did Outcast bounties a long time ago and remember them hurting my Black Legion reputation.
Maybe they patched it and I was not aware. Since, like I said, it’s so easy to get Outcast reputation by killing the 2 most numerous factions along the entire game to even give a damn about the bounties.
Are there any one-off quests from the Outcast faction that I might want to do, just for the story/experience, even if it hurts BL rep? Or are all the quests just repeatable bounty quests?
I’m not sure about Outcast bounties because I haven’t unlocked them yet, but I can confirm that at least Anasteria’s first quest gives -200 Black Legion rep.
Basically, Anasteria is best left as an ally. Also, you don’t really have to do quests for the Outcast, except for sparing Anasteria because they will hurt your Black Legion reputation. You’re best off killing loads of Aetherials and Chthonics as that will automatically improve your rep with the Outcasts.
What I generally do is as soon as I can do her quests, I do the quest for turning in 1x blood/brain/heart, then kalis ka’s fang, then call it a day. Gets me a ton of quick xp and rep, and getting to necropolis more than makes up for the BL rep lost. Her other quests are just “go kill the end boss of this challenge dungeon” but the lore is fun and hey, there’ll probably be more to it in the xpac.
Besides, BL has bounties that are cake-easy if you end up needing them.
Yes, looks like now Outcast quests from bounty table don’t hurt Black Legion reputation (I play in GD from version 1.0.0.6 and did not face with this case). It is most likely that one of the patches removed penalties from Outcast bounties for Black Legion reputation.
I agree that in general to gain Outcast reputation it is enough to complete quests from Anasteria and to fight against aetherials and chthonians. But, from my point of view, there are 3 Outcast bounties that can be regularly taken to gain reputation and additional exp:
- Bounty: Nucus’Dal - slay Chthonian Harbinger, can be found in several places around the Gates of Necropolis, as well as inside the Black Sepulcher.
- Bounty: Harbinger of Chaos - Slay Shar’Zul in BoS.
- Bounty: Lord Executioner - Slay Alkamos in SoT
Well, being the completionist that I am, I would feel weird leaving her quests hanging, so I will probably do them and just eat the BL rep penalty. Hopefully she doesn’t offer too many to make it a real drawback.
If the bounties don’t hurt BL rep anymore, then that will be good as well. I checked some of the Outcast gear, and there are a couple of things I wouldn’t mind having, at least until I get some legendaries!

Anasteria offers only 5 quests per difficulties level. These quests are the same on all difficulties levels and hurt BL reputation on -1100 points in total per difficulties level (if I remember correct).
If you mean the way to gain BL reputation without killing Anasteria then the answer is yes. You can speed up gaining reputation by using BL’s Writs and Mandates
