Does the DA debuff for blade trap ever not take effect?

I’m using blade trap on my blademaster for the tasty DA debuff, which leads to more crits, which leads to more devotion procs.

But, I can’t help wondering if for purple mobs (or any mob on which the animation for blade trap doesn’t trigger) if I’m essentially just reducing my DPS by using blade trap on them. They’re certainly not trapped in place, so I can’t help wondering if the DA debuff also doesn’t activate.

Thank you in advance for any insights provided.

Enemies only get the debuffs if the enemy actually gets trapped. Blade Trap is basically Flash Freeze, where it only works when it actually freezes.

To put it simply, it does not work on bosses and most enemy heroes, and so does not apply the DA debuff on them.

On trash mobs, well, they die too fast for the debuff to be of consequence. Hence, Blade Trap is considered by some to be a “useless” skill.

It has been discussed before, suggestions for change/rework. There are a couple of threads on this.

Olexra’s Flash Freeze also does not work on bosses/most heroes, but at least is useful in crowd control. With some investment it can freeze a huge area around the player.

Not sure if it helps, but there are some very good builds that benefit quite a lot from blade trap in crucible.

Can you explain this, because I fail to see how those points are not a complete waste on wave 150 (to name just one).

For a tier 1 DW melee build 150 is a long road:p When used rightn blade trap evens the odds during key waves where you get rushed by lots of fast elite mobs and heroes. DW or 2h builds are much more susceptible to mobs in crucible than other builds.

For example:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNTrs9eetBw I don’t use it all the time, just at key moments. For just 2 skill points (+skills do the rest) it’s very valuable CC for this build in crucible. I could do without, but it would be harder, riskier ad would take longer due to more annoying kiting.

Edit: alose the vid doesn’t show 100-140, where i use them a lot more. There are some waves with overwhelming mobs for DW during that time.

Thank you for clarifying.

I’ll keep blade trap out of the rotation when fighting mobs immune to its effects that have no adds.

Blade trap is still a worthwhile pick for my blademaster because both offense-oriented celestials activate on crits. It is also useful CC when surrounded by large spawns, as suggested by Superfluff.

That’s too bad to hear. I was actually hoping to find a build that uses Blade Trap a lot since it’s so fun to use.
