Early-game fire immune rotting emberguards

These have been in the game for a long time; however they are an aberration, so I am going to report them as a bug. Furthermore their existence seems counter to previous patchnotes.

Reduced Resistances at low levels for Zombies with exceptionally high resists (ex. Rotting Emberguards). These enemies are highly resistant to particular damage types, which can be difficult to counter at the start of the game.

In both the Wightmire and Burrwitch rift encounters (on veteran, idk if this issue exists in normal) rotting emberguards can spawn with functional fire immunity. These rotting emberguards have around 100% more fire res than the other variants which spawn.

GD is not designed around, nor balanced for, players to have secondary character setups and the ostensible expectation that the player should–for two early-game encounters with characters pursuing one out of the ten available damage types–is not good. It is not realistic for the player to get enough RR to counter this amount of resistance by level 15-20, and while it is easy enough to use a random ground-found 2her to basic attack these emberguards to death…why?

Since this thread has apparently been moved out of bug reports, implying these emberguards have the intended defenses against fire damage, consider the following:

On the left, the fire resistance of a level 109 superboss on ultimate. On the right, the fire resistance of a trash tier level 20 yellow mob that spawn in exactly two encounters on normal(vet).

Make it make sense.

Yup, Burrwitch rift emberguards are clearly bugged. They are immune to fire. When I was playing classless a few months ago, it was really obvious, because they were the only enemies in act1 that wouldn’t take damage from Fireblast.

I also remember them being immune to wind devils, although that was a long time ago and might have been fixed by now.

I actually had this exact thing happen to me a couple days ago, had to equip an ice component on another weapon, swap, and take them out with the ice spell. Kind of panicked, classless is very squishy.

Yes, it spawns the old, pre-nerf version of Emberguards which were essentially Fire immune. I think Crate forgot to change them when doing the overhaul.

It is most likely spawning the original, template 295 Emberguards:

Which have 100+% Fire Resistance from level 1 (actually starts at 125% resistance at level 1 and get near 200% Fire Resistance at levels 100+).

While everywhere else, they’ve been replaced with the reworked versions with vastly lower resistances, templates 1474 and 1475. The numbering clearly indicates these have been created much later.

I would also classify this as a bug. An omission when the elemental zombie resitances were nerfed some time ago from full immunities right from Normal. Just forgot to update the scripted spawn events.

i’m almost guessing it’s not a bug, but more deliberate for that specific spawn
Both because the topic got moved to feedback judging by Ujib’s comment , but also because it was mentioned in the past in conjunction with… some other specific event/shrine spawn with 500? immunity res (that spawn did get nerfed tho as i recall)

It got moved to ideas and feedback 0.1 seconds after I put the thread up. And there is nothing in the latest iteration of the playtest notes either :upside_down_face: .

Not really sure what the point of these emberguards is other than to befuddle new players who had the audacity to try to play a fire build.

that has been my guess all the time too, “teach the youngins about immunities” (or it’s something else, thematic/flavour/old school/other curveball) - only part about if it’s the immunity lesson, that might stand out, is it’s unique to fire these days
(i think all 500 res enemies got reduced to 100? and is encountered so late base RR is usually a given)

GD could definitely use some teaching about RR and immunities, but not at such at early stage and not only for fire =/

I’ve gone through the Burrwitch rift encounters on normal on 2 different characters very recently and I saw these fire immune zombies on both occasions.

Thanks for verifying!
