Enabling Vsync gives a limit of half the max refresh rate. Being 80Hz instead of 160Hz

I would like to report that enabling v-sync on my 160Hz monitor results in 80FPS. I tried with an other monitor, there enabling v-sync gives 60FPS on my 60Hz monitor.
My monitor is a 27" 4k LG 27GN950 running at 160Hz.

I expect with v-sync enabled to have a maximum of 160 fps instead or 80 fps. Another solution could be to have an setting to choose half or the maximum refresh rate of the monitor.

A work around is to disable v-sync and set the maximum refreshrate to 160Hz. This gives a max of 160FPS and mostly 100FPS with my pc which is a 9800X3D CPU combined with a 4080 GPU.

If possible, let me know if this is the correct place to report these requests.

That is how v-sync works.

If your pc cannot maintain 160 fps, v-sync will bump down to the next stable framerate level and try to maintain it. Given that you are mostly getting around 100fps, the results make sense.

If you have a g-sync/free-sync compatible screen (depending on your GPU), you should use that instead of v-sync.

@Zantai Thank you for your reply. I have a g-sync compatible screen and other games (for example Horizon Forbidden west, Anno 1800) set the maximum framerate to 160Hz when I enable the “V-Sync” option in the game settings.
I do not see an option to use G-Sync in the game itself. Where do you enable that?

G-sync is something you enable in the Nvidia Control panel, not in specific games.

@Zantai These are the settings I use in NVIDIA Control Panel. I see:

  • Monitor Technology: G-SYNC compatible
  • Vertical sync: Use the 3D application setting

Should I change one of these?

Then leave v-sync off in applications.

I tried this (and pressed “Apply”) but it does not help. A restart of the game still gives 80fps.
