Factions

so i’ve just accidentally over read a conversation that made me pause and actually think about my conversation options. this has mainly to do with the fact that the presentation is very bland and it feels a lot like your standard mmo quest system. which is very boring after you’ve played a few wow style mmos for a while. so i don’t bother reading the quests texts any more. this of course is a problem when game mechanics are being conveyed via that avenue. like the faction system… i just realized the game had factions. then i tried to find some information on factions. like what they do and especially which one to choose.

i just can’t tell. all those lists with rewards mean nothing to a new player. i don’t care for faction grinding but i care for min/maxing my character… i couldn’t find a simple list that told me what faction to choose from for the kind of character i was going for. to be honest this should be done in the game and not by having to read endless walls of text. the wiki is no help either. is this just something if have to find out over time by gimping enough characters until i know which faction gives which bonuses or do i just miss something obvious?

The only real time you have to choose faction is in Homestead between Kymon’s Chosen and Order of Death’s Vigil. and by listening to what they say, they will clearly say what kind of characters benefit from either kind.
When it comes to Black Legion and outsiders, you should always get outsiders because the only penalty is a slight loss in rep for black legion, nothing else.
Other than that you will get every faction as you progress through the game.

Early game for the two factions is fine, you can choose again in elite, and ultimate. At a price of starting over both factions if you choose to change.

Kymon is basically the warrior type, where deaths vigil is the wizard type.

thank you. while this is helpful, it doesn’t really help other people unless they find this thread which will be buried within days.

there needs to be some explanation in game you can’t miss or at the very least some form of clarification in the wiki. every standard run of the mill rpg has this figured out by giving them clear cut names (fighters guild, mage’s guild, …). while this might be boring the devs to no end it has a very clear purpose without making players of an ACTION rpg reading through walls of text on end.

Very farfetched, almost a lie.

If you talk with the NPCs they will explicitly tell you that Kymon’s is dealing with Physical, Fire and Lightning damage, while Death’s Vigil is dealing with Cold, Vitality and Pets.

But that’s actually less important than the augments (gear enchantments) they have. Kymon has a neat vitality/chaos resist augment for armor at level 70, and DV has a decent aether/lightning augment. When people don’t want to miss this stuff they first choose one faction, max out reputation, buy a stock of augments (like, 50+ each) and choose the other faction on the next difficulty. It’s stupid but it’s the best way.

If you pick the outsiders, you also loose the ability to run the outsider prison as a dungeon for fun and profit. It is a dungeon right next to a way point, and it gives Black Legion rep which is a bit hard to come by, so it isn’t an entirely trivial point.
