With Ashes of Malmouth released which act would you consider to be your favorite
Act I-
Act Boss - Warden Krieg
Main Quest line begins with you waking up and trying to earn your keep at Devil’s Crossing. It ends when you kill the Warden
Act II-
Act Boss - Darius Cronley
Main Quest line begins when you talk to Mornay about Cronely’s Gang and ends when you kill Darius
Act III-
Act Boss - Karroz, The Sigil of Chthon
Main Quest line begins when you talk to Mornay about the Food Supplies and has two routes which get unlocked upon reaching Homestead
Route 1- Homestead faction- this one ends when you reach Honored status with the faction and solve the Devil’s Crossing Food Crisis
Route 2- Black Legion faction- this one ends when you speak to Creed after killing Karroz
Technically only the Black Legion side of things are related to story progression
Act IV-
Act Boss - Loghorrean, The Voice of Chthon
Main Quest line starts by speaking to Creed at Fort Ikon about Lucius’ betrayal and ends by speaking to Creed after banishing The Loghorrean who sucks Ulgrim into the void
Act V-
Act Boss - Ekket’Zul, The Harbinger of Darkness and Ulgrim (should you choose to fight him)
Main Quest line starts by speaking to Creed at Fort Ikon about rescuing Ulgrim. You’re then greeted by Amala and John Bourbon who report Devil’s Crossing has been attacked.
Despite the looming aetherial threat your primary objective of the act is to rescue Ulgrim from the Void’s Edge and maybe give him a sandwich
The act ends with both you and Ulgrim making out of the void through a portal to Lone Watch
Act VI-
Act Boss - Theodin Marcell, The Master of Flesh
To be honest Act V and VI feel like the same act but since Crate did say we’re getting two acts. I am placing Act V and VI as separate options
The entire Act is set in Malmouth and starts at Lone Watch. Your prime objective is to infiltrate Malmouth and make contact with the survivors. You then proceed to do a series of quests to restore the resistance’s foothold in Malmouth
It ends with you defeating Theodin Marcell, the Master of Flesh and Ulgrim not getting sucked into some magic portal:)
P.S
I just posted the Main quests to give you guys an idea of how acts have been separated.
Side quests may factor in your decisions, visit the Grim Dawn Wikia for a list of side quests
Tough call. Art direction is amazing throughout; there’s no clear winner, as there was in D2 with Acts II and V being the standouts. In GD there’s stuff to see around every corner: the dripping caves of Act I, the dusty ruins of Act II, the the forests of Act III, the dark city of Act IV, the endless swamps of Act V with the huge broken statues, the glowing city of Act VI… it’s all great.
In the end, I have to give it to Ugdenbog for the statuary and the trees. It loses a few points for the annoying poison plants, but not enough for Malmouth to win.
I want to be able to burn those lashing things, though.
This. Act 5’s aesthetic is pretty much perfect, and the new faction and quest stuff is great too. It’s basically the “Act 1 but even cooler” I always wanted.
Act 6 is pretty good as well, though pre-patch the tight corridors and insane enemy count always got on my nerves a bit. Now that that’s been alleviated a little I might be able to appreciate it a bit more.
I voted for Act 1 because I think it is the strongest in terms of story arc, pacing and plot exposition.
There’s nice things about all the acts in my opinion. I really like the music in the expansion, it almost rival’s Paul Romero’s soundtrack for MM7. I like the variety of the new enemies and the burning cellar is just a fun place to go. I do wish there were fewer vomit themed enemies though. Also Captain Wilfor annoys me, why does he get to be so foxy when our male avatars look like badly shaved potatoes?
In Act 3 I like the area around Homestead - the conflagration is very ethereal at night, I like the glowing haze as the aether interacts with the mists from the fields and the dempateran (sp?) are fun to fight. The mountain deeps is one of my favourite places in the game along with the spined cove, I think that Crate’s design team do caves really well. I don’t see people talk much about Act 3, maybe because the story dissolves a little around this point to accommodate multiple sub-threads so I wanted to focus on it.
As an act of a story though, I would honestly have to say that Act 1 is definitely the strongest. Clear and simple motivation for your character’s actions throughout. Multiple sources that build up your knowledge of events organically and the way that your knowledge about this world and the way it has gone to hell is tied to the act’s main antagonist was very well done. Also Salazar is fun.
Act 5. It is really beautifully designated. Whole atmosphere is great, monsters, sounds… I love such kind of monsters. I think the ambient sounds in Act 5/Act 6 are the best IMO.
Possibly because Malmouth is more samey? It has a good aesthetic, but it doesn’t vary much until the end. Throughout Act V, there’s much more variety within its overall theme.
I went with Act III, but I and V are up there as well. It comes down to opponents and where I like to go. If I just want to go and play, my favorite spots are the Undercity, SoT, and Tyrant’s Hold.
The aesthetic of Act V is great, but I am not a huge fan of the chaotic forces. I love Ugdenbog, and the area around the Coven, but Grimwold is lacking to me.
Act I is great. It is cohesive, and I love getting the notes detailing how society was breaking down and how every day people were struggling to survive as the world went to hell around them.
