Favorite Mythologies

I’m in the early stages of designing a co-op action rpg board game and I wanted to get a feel for what settings/enemies people would like to see represented. If you’d like to see something not listed or have an idea for something totally new please share. :stuck_out_tongue:

I forgot to include pirates as one of the options! Can you edit a poll?!

Shit, I can’t pick one.

I really love greek/roman/egyptian, even before I played TQ those mythos were something I really loved to read outside of school, TQ only amplified that interest.

Norse has always been cool to me, vikings and odin and thor this and that, but I was never as into it as the others. I guess back when I was growing up it wasn’t really represented well in media, at least in movies or video games.

Chinese/Japanese (why is this one section, are they that similar?) I only know a few japanese demons and random stories but my knowledge is practically nonexistent of these. I do think they are really interesting though.

Aztec/Mayan/Incan, I know nothing… I’ve heard the word Quetzacoatl before, but aside from that …

That said… what about hindu? Native American? Wendigos are a native american thing and I can say without a doubt they are one of my favorite additions to GD…

I know it’s not really based on a culture, but I feel like the Cthulhu Mythos is probably my absolute favorite. Really dig those Outer Gods.

Personally I like the Mesopotamian mythology, since it’s kind of the mother of all the others that followed. Lots of stories are first seen there, like the flood myth that made it into the bible later. Probably because it’s the first one that was ever written down, alongside the Egyptian one. It’s pretty rare in popular culture (TQ did feature it, a bit, to its credit) and it’s fairly messy because it’s old and written down in many languages and added to by several cultures over the millennia but that’s part of the charm for me.

I thought about adding both Native American & Hindu, but decided against having that many options. Just seemed like too many.

And I don’t really know about Chinese/Japanese. They are likely quite different, but I’m assuming they visually similar enough that I would never do both, which is why I grouped them.

I’ve always been interested in the Mesopotamian history as well, but wasn’t sure it would be popular enough to include.

Cthulhu mythos reporting in.

Best of luck with the game!

If you had included Mesopotamian as a choice I probably would have selected that, among the ones listed there are too many options I like about equally (Egypt, Aztec, Norse).

I generally prefer the lesser know ones over the relatively better known Greek/Roman

Me too, especially since the Roman version is essentially the Greek one with different names for everyone. Lazy Romans, what did they ever do for us? :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m a big fan of Slavic/Baltic stuff and it never seems to come up in games, so that would be my pick.

I prefer Greek/Roman , Egyptian

i would like to see aztec/mayan myths, its so rare to see anything of it.

Norse is great as well

For a game, Norse mythology seems to have been getting a lot of attention lately.

Personally, I like most mythologies - as long as it’s well done, that’s the important part

Yes, you can. Well a moderator can anyway. Done.

I’m a big fan of Mesopotamian mythologies.

Thanks!

Appreciate the feedback from everyone, keep it coming!

Definitely sounds like Mesopotamian is a hit. Time to do some research!

Did I mention I plan on having 3-5 different settings in the game? Cheers to time travel!

I hope you know what you’re getting into, time travel in fiction can get very messy

You think that’s messy you should try it in real life!

Seriously though it’s not focal to the game in anyway, and likely won’t even be mentioned.

I prefer fictional mythologies.

I only know relatively well about Greek/Roman, Norse and somewhat Japanese. Japanese shouldn’t had been united with chinese since they are very different due to different faith and beliefs.

There’s also old west-european (celtic) and old east-european (slavic) mythologies which are pretty exotic and rarely explored in fiction. Mesoamerican is slightly better known, but somehow still exotic, as is Hindu. Mesopotamian? Well, idk. I only know about it from TQ.
