[Feedback] Spear of the Heavens

So, I’ve been using this devotion for few months now and I realized the Spear is kind of weak. I am not saying it’s trash or something, it’s a good constelation, since it gives massive amounts of lightning/aether damage and is an easy source to get if you rush for Hourglass on a Aether/Lightning build. The problem with the Spear itself is

  1. It does’t do much in packs of monsters (AoE is way, way too small, therefore it’s mostly a single-target skill).
  2. You need to be hit in order to make a use of it, therefore if your character is squishy, and have no ADctH, you rarely proc it.
  3. Damage is too weak. Increasing WD would not be a great idea, since it works well with ADctH, base damage would also not be that great since it already has a great amount. Now you’ll say I just denied myself saying it has not enough damage but has enough damage, but here’s the deal:

  4. Single target damage is strong, it also stuns non-boss enemies, helping a ton if you have low(ish) defense and ADctH.
  5. AoE is non-existent, therefore the stun and damage is totally irrelevant in waves of monsters. The only thing that can save you somehow is WD + ADctH. This results in having no damage or utility.

To “fix” the devotion you could remove the stun and either:

  • Increase the AoE to 5, from 2.4.
  • Add Crit Damage, scaling with the level of Spear of the Heavens (for example 5% + 2 per devotion level, so 35% at rank 15). If the damage would be rather too high, reduce WD from 60 to 40%.
  • Change it to be triggered whenever the hero attacks. Reduce the coold down to 0.2 secs and reduce the proc chance to 20 - 30% (20% would be rather enough). Eventually reduce the WD by 10 - 30% to prevent overhealing if you have ADctH.
  • Reduce the cool down to 0.1 seconds from 1 and reduce proc chance by 10%. This will result in a fair spam of the Spear whenever you get hit, effectively increasing AoE damage. If needed, reduce the WD by 25%. Could also consider removing AoE from the proc.
  • Make it a single target devotion, increase the WD by 40 - 90% or base damage by 50% of the current value and reduce proc chance to 10 - 30%. Eventually increase the cooldown.
  • Add % reduced target’s resistances (not -%, not x reduced, just x% reduced). Hard to tell if that would be a great idea, though, but no one ever got killed for trying (I guess…).

My experience:
Whenever I fight in a huge, like literally huge pack of monsters, about 30 monsters or more, I can hit at max three targets, if we talk about Ancient Grove monsters but that must be thin enemies like bees or skeletons (skeletons are not in AG). One of my spears hit approximately 20k damage per second if I manage to trigger it every time it’s off cool down and crit with it - that’s basically 40% of the damage I deal per hit, and around 10 - 20% of the damage I deal per second. You need 27 points of devotion (20 blues, 7 reds) to get Spear and you get fairly high amounts of stats, but very mediocre skill.
I rarely see the spear doing anything. The only time I actually see it doing its job is when I check something in my inventory while staying in pack of non-hero+ monsters (because they can’t kill me and I deal damage to them, resulting in killing them after at least 10 seconds).

Values posted in recommendations might be too big or too small, therefore it should be tested rather than automatically added, if Crate would consider buffing Spear of the Heavens.

  • 1 on this indeed, as it is now this skill is pretty much for the show, it hasn’t a real usefulness. Just try to compare it with other tier 3 skills like meteor shower,arcane currents, whirlpool. Just lol

Spear is fine. Its not like aether based chars need any buffs anyway.
