Frame Rate issue with Farthest Frontier

Hi there,

I’m a content creator who was offered access to the game early and I would have loved to cover the game, but my frame rate for the game is terrible. The game chugs along at 30fps with constant freezes and hang ups. I suspect it is a DirectX issue because if I play the game in windowed mode and then I allow the game to run in the background when not paused (like have the game’s window lose focus) my frame rate for the game is totally amazing up to the monitors maximum FPS (144), so it seems like for whatever reason the game when in focus runs terribly, but when its in the background its fine. When running in full screen the game is not bottlenecking my hardware in any way.

Here’s my hardware:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 3.8 GHz 12-Core Processor
  • Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB Black Video Card
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 AORUS MASTER ATX AM4 Motherboard
  • Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32 GB C18 DDR4-3600
  • Drives: Corsair MP510 960 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive (x2)

My video drivers are up to date and I have no issues with any game other than Farthest Frontier and I figured you should know about the frame rate issue before the game goes live on August 9th.

If you have any other questions for me feel free to reach out.

Just to follow up the ~793mb patch today ( August 5th ) did not address the issue.

So that is unusual since we have testers with much older specs running with better performance than you are describing here.

I wouldn’t expect the build that went up today to make a difference as it wasn’t made to address anything along those lines.

I’ve never seen a case, in any game, of someone having better background fps versus in focus, so I don’t have an obvious explanation.

You could try a clean install of your drivers, if you didn’t do so when you last updated them. Try reinstalling directX and VC redistributables. You should also try disabling the background FPS cap, or raise it higher. Also try disabling run in background entirely.

If those fail, perhaps it may be time for an exorcism :scream:.

I’ll do a clean install of nvidia, directx and VC redist drivers.

No matter what the in game settings when the game is in focus it runs very poorly, 30-40 fps and quite choppy where it freezes every 10-15 seconds, but as soon as the game is out of focus its a smooth 144fps with no freezes, quite strange indeed.

Clean install of video drivers, repair of directx and clean reininstall of vc redist drivers and nothing has been resolved.

I also attempted to force DirectX 9 in the launch options, but is there a way for me to edit an .ini to force DirectX9? Would the game run on 9? I have a feeling the issue is with DirectX given how it only runs poorly in focus.

I had this same issue with Anno 1800. From the time the game came out till years after I could not get the game to run without a DirectX crash every 15 minutes. I could run it in the background minimized forever but not fully opened. I tried everything, even as far as reformatting my hard drive and clean install. Nothing fixed the problem.

Now for about a decade and a half I had been a EVGA fan all the way. Their known for a great product and great customer service, I can attest! I use to build EVGA exclusive builds but after ruling everything out I decided to try something different. The moment I plugged in a ASUS graphics card of the same caliber into my EVGA board, my problems went away with Anno 1800. I’ve done a new pc build now with a ASUS graphics card and motherboard and Anno 1800 runs like a dream. I recommend borrowing a different video card from a friend if possible and see how it goes.

Thanks for the suggestion. My bug report was more about making sure Crate knew of a potential issue more than wanting the game to run on my computer. Farthest Frontier was a game I was potentially going to play for work, not one that I was going to play for fun, so going to the lengths of doing a hardware swap out is far more effort for me than it is worth.

Yeah, will do. I’ll also browse the steam discussions to see if anyone else has my issue. I run ALL other games perfectly, this one is an entirely unique and isolated case for me.
