Recently I decided to buy Grim Dawn on my xbox Series S. its a great game but ti crash allot. of I play for more then an hour or two it crash when going through the next portal/rift/new area. Also if its been in sleep mode and I wake it after 8+ hours, it will also crash next time I I enter a portal/rift/new area
What information can I provide to help track that down ?
I’m having the same issue as of today. I was level 25 when it started and I was in the Warden’s Laboratory area just before fighting the warden. This is where it stated. The first time I was scrolling around looking at my star sign map thing… not sure if that’s important information or not.
So far since it’s started today about 3 hours ago (as of this comment) I’ve had 12 crashes. Every crash with the exception of 1 was during combat. The one that wasn’t during combat was when I was selling items in Devil’s Crossing to the vendor.
The game will freeze for about 2 seconds and then my entire Xbox console will do a hard reset. I’ve tried clearing the game cache, rebooting my console myself, and deleting and reinstalling the game. Clearing the cache did make it to where the crashes weren’t as frequent. The crashes averaged 1 crash every 2 minutes of normal play prior to clearing the cache/reserved data on the console. After I cleared it I was able to go about 20-30 minutes without a crash, but once they started again it was back to every 2 or so minutes of normal play.
As of this point the game is completely unplayable and I haven’t even owned it for 48 hours yet. (purchased at 11:00pm July 9th).
Since the issue did not occur immediately, is it specific to a character? You say it started in the Warden’s Lab, but now you also had a crash when selling items after that? Were all the other crashes in the same area?
Anything else notable from when the issue started?
It’s been constant ever since the Warden’s lab to all areas I’ve been to that are immediately after the warden (sorry I can’t remember the location names). I have not tried a new character though, but I will do that tonight and report back if the issue still occurs.
The crash while selling items didn’t happen immediately after, but I’d say within 2 hours of the crashes starting. I’ve tried to play again since making this comment and it’s still just as frequent.
It may not be the game at all! I ended up creating a new character and within the 1st 10 minutes there were crashes. So I did more troubleshooting and deep diving on the internet and I believe the issue is the Xbox console itself. Specifically for those in the preview alpha/skip ahead program. I have been in the program for over 7 years now and had completely forgotten about it. Apparently there is an issue in the latest Xbox preview program update that is causing a small number of user’s consoles to hard reset randomly. I believe this is the cause and nothing to do with the game itself.
More information:
I downloaded and installed the game on a different series x console with my profile and save data for Grim Dawn. I had zero issues with crashes. So this told me it wasn’t anything in my specific save file conflicting with any game code.
After that I tried to figure out what the difference is between the two series x consoles. The only difference is that the console where the crashes were happening is enrolled in the preview program.
Given that information and the handful of reports I’ve found of other preview program members reporting crashes I can only assume that the issue lies with the preview program’s latest OS update which was last night/this morning… just hours prior to my issues beginning.
I’ve unenrolled from the program on the console where the crashes were happening and played for 23 minutes without any crashes so far. If anymore occur I’ll update here.
I apologize for not thinking of the preview program first. At least everyone is aware it could cause potential issues so if anymore Xbox users report similar crashes you’ll have this information on hand!
