So in my continuing adventures in hardware dying this year when I don’t bloody want it too, finally got the warning sign anyone with a HDD dreads. Namely it disappears from windows. Got it back on reboot and are currently copying the 4TB WD Blue drive’s contents to the 10TB enterprise server HDD I brought last year.
Praise the Three I had the foresight to invest in that one.
Unfortunately turning to gmail I found out, much to my complete and utter annoyance, that the 4TB was brought in 2021. Which I brought because all my old WD Blue HDD’s kept going and going for 5+ years and thought it would also last. Alas, it seems over the 2010’s WD evidently gave into enshittification and forgot that making HDD’s that last long, long past their warranties keeps people coming back to you. Add in SMR etc and the crap quality of a lot of NAS drives and the HDD market these days is firmly looking pretty shit.
At least the enterprise segment seems to hold up to the old standards, but yeah, wont be buying WD Blue again. I am tempted though by the allure of a certain 12TB WD enterprise HDD though, though due to budget constraints I went with an 8TB Seagate Exos HDD that is uncursed by the dreaded SMR plaguing lower cost drives.
