Seems like I’ve tried every possible “fix” to try to play this game. Verifying files, running repair tool, updating drivers, reinstalling redistributables, re installing direct x and still nothing. I just get a black screen on launch. At this point I don’t know what else to do
Welcome to the forum.
Have you tried excluding the game from being checked by any anti-virus programmes you have? Also what OS are you using?
I encountered the same issue.

Hello,
I have somehow a similar issue. I mean when launched, the game seems to freeze when loading the first time, however it eventually loads after more than a minute. So the issue in my case has to do with unusually long first-time loading time. I usually play on my desktop using the GOG version (installed via offline backup files not Galaxy if the info is relevant in any way) but I also have the Steam version. I installed it and the same thing happens, my game loads after more than 1 minute. I deleted the save/setting files, same behaviour.
My PC config is i7-12700, 3080 GTX, 32 GB running Win 11, didn’t encounter this issue before, it took around 5 more or less sec to load and enter the game.
Interestingly enough, I also have a small laptop with Win 11 3050 GTX, 16 GB and the GOG version there runs smoothly without any delays in initial loading.
Also I noticed this freeze problem on my Steam Deck - I obv have the Steam version there - as well. There though, it seems to be a random problem, there are times when the game loads normally (5-10 seconds) but there are also many instances when it takes up to a minute or so to start the game. Maybe other Steam Deck users can confirm that since it’s the same hardware and the devs will have an easier time figuring things out…
have either of you tried disabling UPnP in config?
Initial launch issue/before main menu loading into game world can be because of UPnP, Antivirus blocking, or file conflict, like if you have a 1.2+ save and options settings loaded but are launching 9.8 version
if it’s UPnP then go to C:\Users\user name\Documents\My Games\Grim Dawn\Settings options.txt and find the UPNP line and set
UPnPenable = false
save the txt, try start game again (be exit from the game when you edit the txt)
Can confirm it was the UPnP causing problems at least in my case. Steam Deck included.
Ty for the help @Gnomish_Inquisition
I have windows 10 and just windows defender for the antivirus. in the options.txt file there were only two line one for screen mode and another for resolution. I added UPnP enable = false
nothing changed.
that might suggest the game hasn’t/couldn’t write to the options.txt
which could potentially be the thing mentioned with it being interfered or blocked with folder access, so you should exclude it in windows and ensure controlled folder access is off etc
alternatively you can try use the repair.exe tool in game folder, it should make it create a fresh you can try edit in the line in (tho it might not even be that for you, if the folder/txt is “blocked”)
edit. i think i recall someone else posting that issue, i don’t remember if it was reinstalling as admin, or just launching steam+gd as admin that fixed it, there was something pretty simple folder wise for them i feel.
i’ve ran the repair tool multiple times, after installing and uninstalling the game. controlled folder access is off also tried running steam and the game as an admin, at this point ill probably just wait til i build my new pc later this year and try it out at that point because ive tried pretty much everything to get this game to work.
