I was playing spellbreaker. Was level 40, with 4000 health. I was in the Arkovian Undercity, going for the devotion shrine. And then I died to what seemed like 1 attack from a Skeletal Knight. Few hours earlier I almost died to 1 attack from a Groble Warrior in the Pine Barrens.
I’m not gonna say this needs to be fixed quite yet. But did anyone else notice how hard these enemies hit?
You should still be able to upload the deceased HC character to GT provided you haven’t deleted it. That way you can see what you might have been lacking or what could have happened to help fix it for the next HC character. Often when my new character is getting wrecked it is due to a low resistance that I haven’t been able to cover before meeting some monsters dealing a new (to that character) damage type.
Another thing you can try is to look at the monsters you mentioned in GT (Grim Dawn Monster Database) to see what attack or effect might have damaged you.
I know how to play the game. I think I need to paint a picture to illustrate my point.
Imagine the mighty Dranghoul. Twice the size of my character. He does a big swing. His arm glows red. 400 damage, don’t even notice it because I have 700 health regen.
Imagine the humble Groble Warrior. Half the size of my character. His swing is unremarkable. His shortsword is tiny. 2800 damage, my heart is beating, my hands are shaking, my Arcane Will is triggering…
You were probably only rocking about 400 Armor max at that level plus you were playing on Veteran so he gained attack bonuses. He also could have spawned with a nice double affix Physical Damage weapon. Or you were critically hit.
No idea to know what happened unless you share the GT!
imo this has not been enough for a while/“long” time, and is why i’m atleast recommending beginners to aim for 150 health*level
Veteran has had bumps over time, both normal and vet had a bump in 1.2 or something, or was it 1.2.1? so on Veteran you’re having a fair bit of incoming dmg these day to finally feel some heat if you don’t have your res and defences in order
you had a stat shortage somewhere, simple, while being debuffed/fighting a buffed enemy, and an enemy that might even have carried some WYSWYG scaled stats
Okay those Groble numbers do make sense. Now how about the Skeletal Knights? In the game they hit me for 3k damage on the regular. But I don’t see anything like that on their grim tools.
That’s my guess honestly. Smack 'em really hard when their buff is up and you can eat a lot of damage at low level depending on what you hit them with and your equipment/resists… Looks like 15% Reflect with their self buff.
might also not just have been a skeletal knight? but like an archer sending a death bolt from the back, or a warlock or something?
something covering the exact stat gap, be it pierce res, vit res(%health attack), armour etc
No I delete them to reuse the names. I could try to recreate it from memory. But I can’t remember some of the items.
When I died to the skeleton knight, it was instant, 4000 to 0. There were other enemies on screen. Maybe a couple revenants. Maybe an archer on the side. But those were not an issue by this point.
experience tells me, just in general, what we perceive as 1shots (true 1shots) are rarely actual 1shots
This then compounds when more enemies are actually present.
*one of the best direct illustrations is ofc highest dmg taken, char has X health, but max dmg taken turned out to be actually Y.
In vast majority of complaints or general notes i’ve seen over time, it was just an unfortunate series of dmg instances “at the same time”, suddenly much easier to explain it.
*this doesn’t dismiss true 1shots, they do occur, and is even outright more plausible in some scenarios where big hits are expected, reflect, voldrak, aleks meteor etc
So i’m either skeptical it was purely a regular/solo skeleton knight causing a 1shot, but also that it was a true 1shot. Because it’s just so rare people got the specific moment in the scenario truly right. - and yet i’d kinda be fine with it based on my own defence perception (150 *lvl instead of 100 *lvl now and such extras etc)
(and videos demonstrate that often, also even if the actual dmg hit turned out to be huge, but 80-95% is not the same as 100+% ofc)
Here’s my new character. Essentially the same build as the last one, but better. I just cleared Twin Falls and Steps of Torment up to the door. Skeleton Knights are a complete nightmare. They hit me for more than 50% of my health. If there’s 2 of them on the screen, I pretty much just have to run away.
