I finally picked up Grim Dawn and am ready to dive in. Except that I’m not ready, because holy lord the character paralysis is real!
I’ve played a ton of action RPGs (including a lot of Titan Quest, so I get how the mastery system works in theory), but the level of depth and complexity here is kind of overwhelming (in a good way, but still).
So, help me pick a good class for a first playthrough where I can have fun, learn the game, farm some gear for later characters, etc.
Things I like:
Elemental damage and spellcasting (flashy stuff, woo!)
Melee combat (although ranged in this game looks interesting)
Tactical and interesting gameplay (positioning, skill synergies, etc)
Things I don’t like:
Boring “blunt instrument” style where you just bash things till they die (even if it’s technically super OP)
Pet builds (not my thing)
With all that in mind I’ve been looking at the Arcanist, Nightblade, Demolitionist, Inquisitor, Occultist, and Oathkeeper as possible masteries to pull from.
Part of my problem is that I don’t know if there any huge late-game factors I should be aware of. For example, a fire based Demo/Oathkeeper looks interesting, but if there are a bunch of fire resistant mobs/bosses then that would feels bad man after 20+ hours of playtime.
So yeah, any thoughts on a good class or two I should consider to get started with?
You get so much -RR as shieldbreaker that fire resistant enemies are not a huge deal. Warlord is still extremely powerful and can build built a bunch of different ways, you can even spec it for fire damage and it still wrecks.
TBH i don’t like demo because it is just tedious to play, thermite mines are clunky and then you have a dozen other abilities you need to juggle, i would rather pay more attention to the actual combat than my abilities. Demo is still very strong though and has great synergy with a bunch of other classes.
Tactician is pretty nice, and works really well with melee, range and even with s&b. Fun to play too.
The most fun I had with melee is a poison/acid spin to win Dervish. He is fast, dynamic, stylish and has a very good damage. The thing I love the most is a synergy between Eye of Reckoning and Eye of the Guardian constellation.
Another build I like is Obsidian Juggernaut witchblade, but it’s basically a flashier unga bunga forcewave guy who also needs a certain legendary weapon.
EoR builds early leveling can be extremely tedious and energy consuming. Also for first play through one can’t count on finding specific legendary item.My suggestion is Malawiglenn Callidor tempest Spellbinder. It combines melee and caster style and later game you can farm Krieg set,one of the few with fixed drop location https://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80822
What kind of stats do you have on that Dervish? Went with Cold EoR Dervish and except for Grava, Gargabol and Alkamos, all other mobs so far have fallen before me on Ultimate.
Hey,Goober since you got little off-topic I am gonna continue:D.I tested at end of previous patch dw cold Dervish.Amulet was nerfed,so should be replaced, but here’s my test subject and video from Mad Queen 11-12 sec https://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83480&page=7
In fact, i started the game with his lightning vindicator, used it to farm equipment for other characters, then went back to it again with end game equipment
My suggestion is that you first you fool around and try to learn and see what all classes skills are about. Just start chars without any thought of endgame etc. Then when you have some feeling for what skills you might enjoy playing with, you can try to follow some of these beginner guides
NOTE!!! The build guides have a playstyle in mind for END GAME, they might suggest other ways of leveling up. That is why I think its best to first explore skills and then decide.
Also, what is your goal? " A First Playthrough" can mean many things. It can mean “complete main campaign in Normal difficulty” it can mean “complete main campaign in Ultimate difficulty” and it can also mean “complete some of the endgame areas in ultimate”
I’m looking to play through to Ultimate on a single character. I highly doubt I’ll have the time or interest to farm a bunch of rare gear, but I’d like to experience my way through the full picture of the game.
I’m leaning towards a fire based Templar at the moment.
