GPU Power?

Any idea how i can command Grim Dawn to use my full GPU power?

Problem is in Act 4 in some regions with many spell power and enemys on screen the fps goes near down to 30…on a GTX 1080 (Win 10)…and thats not what i call smooth gaming.

The problem in fact is that Grim Dawn uses only ~40% of my GPU.

In Port Valbury, after using the skeleton key on the gate, the fps goes so much down (under 25) that i die cause the game is stuttering to much…and you know how angry it is to die in there and lost one of the real rare skeleton keys :furious:

You are usually CPU bound, if you have a passable graphics card, and the frame rate drops because of all the gameplay calculations, which need to be done by your CPU in these areas / situations. Your GPU is basically waiting for your CPU.

Waiting for a Core i7-7700K? Think again

What Eisprinzessin did not make clear is that the game only really utilizes 1 and abit cpu cores. This is a limitation of the game engine as it was built when most people were running single or dual core processors. My guess is that even though Crate have been able to push the engine far past it’s original potential it is still fundamentally hobbled by its original design and core coding.

They may be able to add true multi threading support at some point but this would not be an easy process, and could end up breaking more things than it fixes. Though i do not underestimate the power of Rhis’ technomancey…

Best option would be to build Grim Dawn 2 and start with a new engine like CD Project RED did for The Witcher 2, or they could use a licensed engine that has proven multi thread optimization, either way it is still a lot of work for the programmers, there is still a lot of new scripting to be written so that the engine gives you the features you want.

Basically 3 things directly impact how well your CPU can pass information to your GPU. CPU clock speed, CPU cache size and how efficiently your motherboard transfers data from your CPU to your GPU through the Pci-e bus (this depends on both pci-e bandwidth and chipset architecture).

Also optimized drivers can help with performance, but i don’t thing Crate has the money to throw at nvidia to bring out a “Grim Dawn” optimized drive.

GD however can only utilize a certain % of your machines potential once it gets beyond a certain point. I have a Performance V8 and had to have the top end of the motor rebuilt because i blow it up. When the mechanic and i finished putting it all back together, with better parts then i originally had, so i should have gotten more power out of it, the engine seemed a bit flat on my first drive home from the garage. When i got home i checked under the hood and found that the mechanic had connected the throttle cable in such a way that it only opened 3/4 of the way. Thus it did not matter how much power i had under the hood, i couldn’t use it all until i readjusted the throttle cable so i could get full throttle. In its current state GD will never allow your high end gaming machine to run at full throttle.

i could elaborate further but there are already many threads on the forum dealing with this issue. Really there should be a faq for this inquiry or a sticky thread because it comes up often enough, even if it is a sore point.

^ Exactly what sunandsteel said.

The thing is, each time there is a special circumstance, like a sale or such, new people show up and complain about performance. Those of us who love the game and the developers to bits know how this game came to be, so we are more forgiving, but the people who discover the game just now don’t give a shit really. Not that it’s anything gamebreaking, the game kicks ass no matter what, but it would be so much more awesome if it made use of more cpu juice.

Ok thanks, it is engine limitation and not a special trick to unleash more power for Grim Dawn.

By the way: I’m with the game from the beginning of its kickstarter campaign. But this is the first time i play the game beyond Act 3…i wonder that this problems are not in the first 3 acts and only starts in Act 4.

Thanks anyway, and know guys: I love Titan Quest and i love Grim Dawn too

So lets hope for the next game from Crate they have enough money to use another, modern engine
