I’ve seen the game crash from 2016 all the way to now. Over the years I’ve tried many things and read through many posts of people with the same issue. Nothing has worked. These crashes are a frustrating experience, in what is otherwise the ARPG I’ve enjoyed the most in my life. I would love to help put an end to this issue for myself and others.
Details about the problem:
Sometimes, Grim Dawn just crashes and freezes completely (black screen) and there’s nothing I can do besides terminating the process via Task Manager and submitting a crash report afterwards. Sometimes the crash report submission interface doesn’t appear.
On average this happens every 6 hours or so, but it’s very variable. Sometimes it happens within 5 mins of launching the game. Sometimes I play for 5 days without crashes. I suspect it may be related to graphics because the music and ambient sounds keep playing fine after the screen has gone black. Crashes can happen both with music ON or OFF (music volume slider to zero in the options).
I’ve tried:
- Clean reinstall of Grim Dawn after deleting both the install folder and the \My Games\ folder
- Disabled cloud saves both on steam and in-game
- Verified game files through stream; everything is OK
- Copied only my current character save files (\My Games\save\ folder only) to keep playing
- Updated graphics card drivers with a clean installation (SD now, but I’ve tried the GRD before)
- Updated Windows 10 fully (includes updates to DirectX)
- Installed VC++ redistributables
- I don’t have any mods installed or any custom files
- Ran other graphically-demanding applications on this machine; none of them have issues
- Ran CPU and GPU benchmarks and burn-tests; everything is OK; temperatures and voltages are normal
- Ran RAM tests; everything is OK; disks and other components are working fine too after many test
- Ran Grim Dawn with default/custom processor affinities
None of these attempts have solved the issue.
I don’t know if the problem depends on specific hardware so here are my specs:
ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 2
Intel Core i7 7700K
2x Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB DDR4-2800MHz CL14
ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
SSD Samsung 850 EVO 250GB
I’m uploading my dxdiag and a zip file with my latest crash report. I looked through the xml/html files but saw nothing relevant. Don’t know how to open the .dmp file.
DxDiag.txt (111.7 KB)
d63f9135-c9e1-4bf6-bbbf-a60412a9effc.zip (28.4 KB)
It seems like nothing on my end works. How else can I try to fix this?
What if this isn’t end-user related and there’s something wrong with Grim Dawn’s development build; how can I help pinpoint/debug/reproduce the issue? Is there a way to run in debug mode or something to gather more information?
