So because of the lack of cross-play between GoG and Steam I have not been able to play Grim Dawn with my steam loving friend since the game’s released. Today I noticed that its available on GoG connect for a limited time (12 days left when im writing this).
Now I’ve never used GoG connect myself since my steam library is rather small but if im not wrong it means that everyone with a steam copy of the game can ALSO get a GoG copy, which finally would allow me to play the game with my friend.
I just wanted to inform people who have been in a similar situation or just want the GoG version as well. Im sure some Grim Dawn owners on GoG would be very happy if the GoG part of this community grew.
Interesting idea. But there’s still this proviso in the FAQ.
Can I play the GOG versions of the games with my Steam friends (the multiplayer ones)?
This depends entirely on the game – not all games support multiplayer gameplay between Steam and GOG.com.
The blurb on the GOG store page says only GOG users can multiplay so I’d check with GOG before assuming it’s possible.
I might have been unclear with what the “solution” was. My friend connects his steam to his gog to get a gog copy. With both having a gog copy we join each others’ games using gog galaxy and play on gog.
Calling it crossplay sort would be a stretch (sorry if I did), but it solves the crossplay problem I had (not being able to play with my buddy).
GoG Connect is only a solution if Crate decides to participate. To better understand what GoG Connect is, one should read their web page.
I’ve bolded the pertinent info in the quote below.
You’ll be able to permanently import all the games listed below to your GOG.com library – assuming you own them. The eligible games are limited-time offers made possible by participating developers and publishers, so stay tuned for more games to come.
Argh thats crappy, it seems to have been taken away. I hope its not because I made this post and some developer realized some mistake (im getting paranoid). Been waiting for 2 years now to play this game with my buddy and still no success.
My friend did sign up for the connect before it was removed but got told that GoG were under heavy load and it would take up to 2 days to get the game, hopefully it registers from sign up and not delivery or else I might never get to play the game in coop with the guy.
EDIT:
Turns out this was planned all along and just poorly communicated by GoG.
I wonder though why Grim Dawn was so limited, I mean I hope Crate do not expect to make a lot of money on people buying multiple versions of the game. In my case (if my friend did not get Grim Dawn) they would loose out on money because me and my buddy are only withholding buying DLC until we actually can play together.
Yeah, just saw this on the GOG GD forum. My guess is that as the other games are available for 14 days someone slipped up and didn’t notice that GD wasn’t. Pretty piss poor communication just the same and why limit that one game to such a short period of time?
