Grim Dawn Questionnaire Thread

I’ve been meaning to make this awhile. I was just kind of wondering what people both liked and didn’t like as much in Grim Dawn. Feel free to add to it if you’d like.

Favorite class?

Sentinel. It’s just fun.

I had wanted to purchase Grim Dawn earlier but didn’t jump into it until AoM’s launch, which was also my birthday (October 11th), so it seemed like it was meant to be. My first character was a Death Knight and it was… rough. It was probably a combination of having no idea of what I was doing and stubbornly refusing to use anything but 2H weapons. I must have died well over a hundred times. I still have a soft spot for my 2H Death Knight but she just can’t handle much.

Least favorite class?

Purifier. Too boring.

Favorite dungeon?

Port Valbury. It seemed like a lot of effort was put into designing it and the Paige Rehnaul story legitimately made me sad. It really sold me on how depraved the world of Grim Dawn was and maxed out my hatred of the aetherials. Those swirling aether balls that chase you around helped. It’s just very well done start to finish.

Least favorite dungeon?

I’m not really sure. Probably Tomb of the Heretic. It just seems weird and out of place. It’s also not much of a tomb. I guess I was just expecting something different.

Favorite zone?

Necropolis. I like smashing everything.

Least favorite zone?

Ugdenbog. I like Wightmire but Ugdenbog just feels like it goes on and on forever. Maybe it just needs more landmarks.

Favorite faction?

Order of Death’s Vigil or Rovers. They both have cool lore.

Least favorite faction?

Cronley’s Gang. It’s better since the unique music was added around Cronley’s Hideout but it still takes forever to farm, even with a warrant.

Favorite town?

Fort Ikon or Devil’s Crossing.

Least favorite town?

Barrowholm. Place is a dump.

Favorite boss?

Korvaak. I was worried I would be disappointed with him due to the ridiculously long build-up he had (basically starting in Homestead) but thankfully, that did not happen.

Least favorite boss?

Grava’thul (hands down), with Kubacabra coming in second. It’s pretty easy to reach nemesis with the beast and cthonian factions and they always spawn in the worst possible places for me. It’s usually when I’m just trying to go somewhere quick, I’m always unprepared and it inevitably turns into this huge, overly drawn out ordeal.

Favorite Class

Saboteur. It’s had a long fall from grace that it’s unlikely to ever recover from, but it’s still just a damn fun concept to zip around blowing people up…especially with lightning damage.

Least Favorite Class

Trickster. I dunno, I’ve just never seen one that looked appealing to me.

Favorite Dungo

Port Valbury. Great aesthetic and you gotta stay on your toes at all times. All it really needs is Aetherials from AoM in it.

Least Favorite Dungo

Bastion of Chaos. Too hard on the eyes and the blockade spawns feel fairly unnatural/create too many dead-ends.

Favorite Zone

Edge of Reality…the first one.

Least Favorite Zone

Ugdenbog up until Barrowholm. Too open with too little to do. It’s like if you took Wightmire and removed all the hidden areas and sidequests. There’s a lot of stuff that brings you back to Ugdenbog, but not much to do on a first pass.

Favorite Faction

Chthonians. Badass giant Lovecraftian horrors? Hell yea!

Conceptually, though, I’m team Aetherial. Cold calculation beats out rampant destruction. Both of GD’s core enemies are pretty solid.

Least Favorite Faction

ODV/KC. Such a boring farm. One can only tolerate so many Tomb/Haron runs.

Favorite Town

Homestead. Great theme music there.

Least Favorite Town

Burrwitch Village. Same problem as Ugdenbog. It’s really just a bit of a run with nothing to do except stopping by Harvey and not saying hello so as to spare his life and to quickly pop in and rescue Darlet.

Favorite Boss

Hm. There’s a lot of good ones. Shar’zul, Ekket’zul, Grava, Theoden, Korvaak, and Morg are all pretty fantastic.

Probably Theoden just for his theme music. He still needs more health, though!

Least Favorite Boss

There aren’t a whole lot that I don’t like. The boring ones tend to die quick enough. Amalgamation I suppose. It’s easier to kill than actual Amalgamations and is really far out of the way making for an uneventful boss in the middle of nowhere.

BONUS ROUND

Favorite Music

Non-combat - Foot of Earth. Super tranquil but not quite ‘safe’-feeling. Nails the post-apocalyptic devoid-of-life feeling of Act 1.

Combat - The Penance Due. What a fucking killer piece of music. Shame it’s on the Loghorrean of all things! Could easily put this to a Celestial like Callagadra or Crate. There’s a few…slip ups(?) in the piece that don’t quite sound right around 1:12/1:26 (when the horns are ascending the musical scale, some of the notes feel a little too drawn out) but other than that this piece is mindblowing.

Hybrid - Forgotten/Keep Moving. Forgotten is amazingly heroic, which is great for an ARPG about saving the world salvaging the world. Keep Moving feels stressful and tense, but not without glimpses of hope. Just like GD’s world. Skewsound crushes it with both.

Least Favorite Music

Non-combat - Lament. I’ve heard it too much…that’s really it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Combat - Facing a God. Doesn’t do it for me. Feels like a lot of build-up with no real payoff. Korvaak’s other two themes are lit though.

Hybrid - Devil’s Crossing. Eh.

Favorite Item

Earthsplitter. Sundering the ground into three shotgun-capable blasts of brutal Physical Damage? Yes please.

Least Favorite Item

Voidspire…because it won’t bloody drop!

Actually, probably Beacon of Lost Souls. A pet item is bound to be low on my list and I can’t even find a good cosmetic use for this thing.

Alright, let us do dis:

Favorite class?

Pets :3

Before you say “Pets” are not a class, when you are me every class is a pet class.
So the only difference is whether it is a pet build or not image

Least favorite class?

Classless image

Not enough stuff to bind devotions procs to so you are forced into taking things just for that.
Also not enough stats for most stuff, so you need to rely on specific Green MI’s and such.
Even then, it is just a pain in the butt.

Favorite dungeon?

Ancient Grove. It has Vinelton and I like the jungle atmosphere.
Kurast was my favourite zone in D2 for eg.

Also, Pet builds have easy time with Gargabol image

Least favorite dungeon?

Port Valbury image

Aetherfire? No ty.
And all that green hurts my eyes.

Favorite zone?

Ugdenbog. Same reason as for Fav. Dungeon. I like the jungle atmosphere.
Also my favourite Training Dummy can only be found here: Ravager.

Least favorite zone?

Malmouth. With that City Layout, it was a good thing it fell to Aetherials image

Favorite faction?

Beasts. Easy to reach Nemesis status with image

Least favorite faction?

Eldritch. Because I hate Kaisan image

Favorite town?

Devil’s Crossing. Maybe because it is the starting town and you spend most time there. But I also kind of like having access to everything without having to walk too much image

Least favorite town?

Barrowholm. Except for the Test Dummy, not much of worth here. Atleast for me.

Favorite boss?

Ravager. Easy to test my builds on. Isn’t annoying like that Dried up Bat in the Desert, but is fairly strong enough to gauge the strength of a build.

Least favorite boss?

Callagadra & Crate of Entertainment.

Yes, it is a tie between those two. Both are equally annoying in their own different ways. But I need them to properly guage whether my build is good enough or not image

My answers are probably going to be pretty general

Favorite class?
Anything with lightning Shaman or Oathkeeper spinning to win

Least favorite class?
Anything with Nightblade or Arcanist. I’m getting to like Nightblade a bit more, but liking Arcanist is hard.

Favorite dungeon?
None; I don’t go into them.

Least favorite dungeon?
See above

Favorite zone?
Not sure I really have one. I like pretty much all the areas in the game.

Least favorite zone?
The usual two I guess: Ugenbog and Malmouth city. Ugdenbog for it’s sheer size and Malmouth for the difficulty of finding my way around the place. I’m getting better at navigating both, but I’m always glad when I’ve got them out of the way.

Favorite faction?
Since I rarely get out of Normal difficulty faction rep rarely applies, but I guess I’d have to say Rovers just because they have a shrine quest. I do like getting all the shrines asap.

Least favorite faction?
See above

Favorite town?
DC. I like seeing people gradually populating it and also seeing it change when you bring the fabric back to Constance.

Least favorite town?
Conclave of the Three. Having to run up/down stairs or over the bridge to reach various quest givers is a bit annoying.

Favorite boss?
Since the only one I’ve met so far is Kuba I guess it has to be him.

Sentinel, good variation of builds one can do with it.

Least favorite class?

Defiler. Weak.

Favorite dungeon?

Bastion of Chaos, just because it looks hellish

Least favorite dungeon?

Steps of Torment, too easy. And Alkamos rings have too generous drop chances.

Favorite zone?

Ugdenbog, nice forrest where you can pick valuable flowers. No bridge to repair though.

Least favorite zone?

Crown hill / Malmouth city Those stairs drive me nuts!

Favorite faction?

Dreeg because of Dreegs Omen augment.

Least favorite faction?

Cronley’s gang. Farming “anti-reptuation” for them is PITA

Favorite town?

Barrowholm. Scorv is a nice fellah

Least favorite town?

Conclave of the tree - the NPCs are too spead out there and you have to walk stairs to get between them.

Favorite boss?

Master of Flesh. Always fun stuff happening in that room.

Least favorite boss?

Karroz. Boring crap boss. Needs a buff

Cool thread

Favorite class?
Sentinel. It is because chaos EoR is my favourite build and I managed to make a great fashion dawn for it. Empyrion brothers are always amazing and ascension is a great buff. From occultist side, of course doom bolt being so satisfying and bloody pox having great debuff. Remember to keep blood of dreeg up tho

Least favorite class?
Elementalist. I have made 2 of them. One was actually fun to play because I had cyclone set and whole map was in tornadoes. My problem with it is that I mostly go lightning damage and that means having to apply rr with widow, which I don’t like. Demolitionist has thermite mines and I hate them  But blackwater cocktail leveling is amazing!

Favorite dungeon?
Port Valbury. Not because of aetherfire of course, but because it has so much lore in it and it looks like a real town. Its music is one of the best themes too!

Least favorite dungeon?
Steps of Torment. Where Valbury looks like a real town, SoT is not that believable… I will try to explain lol. I think SoT is a torture chamber, but its layout is weird, more of a maze. Imagine being alkamos and having to go all these floors to go outside :expressionless: Of course it’s a video game so it’s not a bad design, I just don’t like it

Favorite zone?
Korvan City. Great music, great ruins. Feels like a final area because there is destruction everywhere  And Korvaak fatties

Least favorite zone?
Blood Grove. Location looks nice, but I hate it has many blockages and quest related stuff is randomly placed in there like Lissandra and void rifts. If only we could remove these rocks with dynamite…

Favorite faction?
Scorv… I mean Barrowholm. Great faction wearing a mask, basically like you move to a new town and everyone is kind and nice, but it feels… weird. Then they eat you. Cool suff

Least favorite faction?
FUCK KYMONS

Favorite town?
Devil’s Crossing because it’s a first location in game and had a great theme. Also many quests involve in making in a bettter place for survivors and we get new people in here too! Still can’t invite Harvey :frowning:

Least favorite town?
Old Arkovia. I always forget to rift here after killing forges and Moneybags… and royal jelly quest uhh, have to get jelly from my stash >:(

Favorite boss?
My boy Theodin Marcell. Wish the fight was longer because he has such cool set of attacks and quotes it is just lovely to fight him. Also his transformations are amazing! Really good final boss. Honorable mention is Bane Gargoth because he is an obsidian defiler.

Least favorite boss?
Nexan Shade. Small room, he shits out aether everywhere. If he dies fast it is cool, my frist characters had many troubles with him…

Paladin. I know Zantai is going to hate this but my two favorite masteries are Oathkeeper and Inquistor so OF COURSE my favorite class would be Paladin.

Least Favorite Class

Trickster. Kind of agree with Ceno here. I’ve never been able to wrap my head around this character.

Favorite/Least Favorite Dungeon

Don’t really have one as the dungeons are not where I spend a lot of time. They all have pros and cons to them.

Favorite Zone

Asterkarn. I LOVE cold weather environments. The stark harsh blinding tundra.

Least Favorite Zone

Anything with pathing issues. Malmouth is gorgeous, as is Port Valbury but some of those pathing issues navigating stairways and stuff are rage inducing.

RUNNER UP: Asterkarn because I would really LOVE to have more stuff to actually do in there so I could spend more time.

Favorite Faction

The Black Legion. I’m a Vet so go figure.

Least Favorite Faction

Barrowholm. Because they have certain faction augments that are virtually required on every gear but it makes me feel dirty and soiled everytime I have to side with those cannibals.

Favorite Town

Homestead and Devil’s Crossing.

Least Favorite Town

Barrowholm. Gives me the friggin creeps.

Favorite Boss

Probably Korvaak. Thematically I just like how the confrontation unfolds. His taunting you after humiliating Kymon and then the rage.

Least Favorite Boss

Probably Alkamos. But that’s probably because early on in my game play journey I decided I wanted those friggin’ rings and I spent WAYYYYYYY too much time farming him.

BONUS ROUND

Favorite Challenge

I thoroughly enjoyed the Classless HC challenge. It taught me so many intricacies of them game and fundamental stuff that it was a very rewarding accomplishment. It took me a while as I lost two characters along the way but getting through that and doing it alongside some other veterans on the board and talking about troubleshooting the builds and all was one of the highlights of the game for me.

Favorite class?
I haven’t played with all classes but among the ones I played it’s druid.(rn I’m leveling with druid and it’s fun)

Least favorite class?

I haven’t played with all classes but I guess I never play Cabalist

Favorite dungeon?

Port Valbury. I like it’s theme music very much and even I’m now an experienced player it’s still a thriller challenge.

Least favorite dungeon?

Bastion of Chaos. Too dark for my eyes.

Conclav Thrones.

Least favorite town?

Egypt : Conclav Thrones releax.

Favorite boss?

Shattern Realms , like superboss.

Least favorite boss?

Avatar Mogdrogen, Ravager, Kalagadra, Create Enteraitment.

Favorite Music

This is hard.

Main: No Man’s Land, Lonely Moon, Forgotten and Gruesome Harvest.

AoM: Fire & Steel, Into the Ugdenbog and City of Ruins.

FG: Korvan Memories/Remnants/Sorrow (sadly, despite being on the OST, these don’t seem to be in the game?) and Eldritch Sun.

Least Favorite Music

This is easy. Infested Farmlands. It’s the only song I don’t like in the entire GD OST.

Favorite Item

Will’O’Wisp. Otherwise, Dirge of Arkovia (Skeletal Servant refuses to die) or Bonescavenger’s Deathgrips (it’s hilarious watching the Spectral Servants run off and aggro monsters by punching them in the face). Soulrend is cool too.

Least Favorite Item

Burrwitch Brew. What is the point of this? It lasts forever, stuns you and almost got me killed the first (and only) time I used it.

Yeah, reading this and seeing how many people mentioned Malmouth as their least favorite zone is bringing back a lot of repressed memories.

It took me a long time to learn the layout–easily more than anywhere else. Obviously GD can be really ornery with bridges and stairs. The monsters just seemed absurdly powerful compared to everything else you met beforehand, chewed up my pets like nothing and are so densely packed that it felt like I was crawling sometimes. It’s all made worse with the ground AoE dropped everywhere because so much of it is close quarters, it’s hard to avoid. Admittedly, Malmouth on my first character was a pretty miserable experience.

It’s grown on me and I’ve come to like it since–I enjoy the class specific dialogue options such as with Eraline and always feel a strong desire to unleash vengeance on the aetherials for what they did to Kaylon the blacksmith. I mean, just when you think the aetherials cannot possibly become more depraved or sink any lower they had to go wreck his tent and everything–it’s just unforgivable. Their complete and utter annihilation can’t even begin to correct the injustices he was forced to endure.

I’ve always wished (even now) that it had a portal next to or at the beginning of the Fleshworks so you didn’t have to battle through most of Crown Hill to reach it. The Necropolis has a portal basically at the entrance, Warden Krieg’s dungeon has several portals and even the Tomb of the Eldritch Sun has one at the beginning and one near the end.

Favorite class?

Warlock, it’s fun to play, it has that cool caster vibe and it’s actually good and underrated, both while levelling and at end-game.

Least favorite class?

Anything Soldier that doesn’t use Blade Arc. Boring mastery

Favorite dungeon?

Ancient Grove, beautiful dungeon with an interesting and challenging boss at the end that makes you think your placement twice.

Least favorite dungeon?

Either the Bastion with its boring gates that takes too much time to open or Tomb of the Heretic because of the stupid final boss and his overtuned damage absorption.

Favorite zone?

Gloomwald

Least favorite zone?

Malmouth, I hate the stairs.

Favorite faction?

Cult of Bysmiel, for uh, reasons.

Least favorite faction?

Cronley’s Gang and Order of Death’s Vigil/Kymon’s Chosen, they are not used enough and farming their reputation takes a lot of time.

Favorite town?

Covenant of the Three since it has every crafting NPC.

Least favorite town?

Favorite boss?

Ezzet-Kul, he has a nice-looking arena and interesting skills (yes I love those Ravenous Earth-like skills)
