My guess is it appears to be gunpowder of some sort, but I may be wrong. If I am, I’m sure Zantai’s still got something cool in store! 
Awesome art and some great details. But I am confused as to what exactly these are and how you say in the beginning there are unique ones, then later there or no varying tiers. I feel stupid :P.

These are socketable items for gear.
There are no tiers in the sense that you will not hit a certain level where you will suddenly start getting Rat Feet 2.0 instead of Rat Feet 1.0. Finding an epic component is akin to finding a level 30 epic sword when you’ve been finding level 30 common swords.
As someone already said, please don’t half-do it! Many games just put a crafting system that has no benefit at all to waste time in…
And, by the way, great look on the crafting items!

I’m gonna find LOVE in GD.
I want to see the stats for that one that seems to be a bag of grain? (A3) And the large gem. (Probably Diamond, C2) Also, offer my personal complements to whoever came up with this component system. I very much like it.
Which ones do we already know ? I believe they are A1, A2 and B3
In any case, I am curious about C6 and D1.
Not sure I like the idea of not having normal / epic / legendary ones, I guess we will see how the balance and more powerful schematics work out. Could be superior however

First, the wording (Used in…) on these items is a little weird. Are they socketables or are they enchants?

please let us use them in uniques! That was one of the biggest disappoints to me personally in TQ.

Are these upgrades that are used in any item, or are they only for certain items (like gems are to sockets in Diablo)? If they are like sockets, they should be like DII where some uniques come with sockets.
They are socketables in that you place them in gear, and they can be removed from said gear to be reused.
However, there are no sockets in our gear. All items can handle one component (yes, that will include uniques, though this feature may not be in alpha).
ok cool There should be a unique or rare descruiptor that has multiple “slots” for them.
Any cost involved in doing so?
I hope there will be a cost, can’t have it too easy now can you?

certainly not easy to spot, but man what a lot of items, but really nice job, can’t wait to find a few of those items, I think we players will need all the help they can get
