Grim Misadventure #117: Epic Ensembles

What, not every mesh is 100% unique out of hundreds of items? You must be very disappointed with AAA companies then. :stuck_out_tongue:

Even this one, while fundamentally based on the meshes you pointed out, involved remolding the meshes and doing completely new textures.

If every item was 100% unique, the art budget would explode, or we would have to dramatically cut down on new items. We pick our battles, though the budget for legendaries tends to be higher due to the higher expectations.

Can look into including something for the more numerically driven in the future, but historically updates that focus on visuals over numbers tend to be more widely enjoyed.

I suspect that may rely on them being visually unique rather than recycled. I guess visuals alone gives the community more to speculate on though.

I for one am very interested in that Corruptor of Souls set. I was already planning on playing a Necromancer/Shaman, so this appeals to me. I like how the art style is a bit nature-y, a bit deathly. And that bit about Bone Harvest having synergy with pets? Do tell me more.

Visual unique numbers? This calls for bars and pie charts!

<3 cool! Would love to toy around with calculators and imagining/discussing builds that could be. Negative side of that is that players might be dissapointed if something doesn’t get in the final version.

I, for one, would be interested in, say… The unique skills offered in new items, or the devotion tree, WITHOUT numbers. No number would really be reliable at this stage, of course, but the mechanics and damage types CAN be relied on, presumably, so it would still open us up for theorycrafting, without tying Crate to numbers in any way.

Wait… Crate taking a suggestion I mention? Perish the thought.

i’m more excited for this update than a virgin on prom night!

I definitely expect them to, same as for GD

The artwork for legendaries so far was unique. Just really hope new sets will not be visibly rehashed textures like Warborn (except shoulders maybe) or Venomblade,

“Hear, hear”

Well, I am looking forward to this expansion. Thanks crate for an amazing game!!

What ?? So you don’t have a Rockstar-sized team ?

@Dickarooney more seriously tho, look at some of the widely used top-tier green items. They are not just the same mesh, they are the same item, just with different numbers/properties. Nevertheless, there are hundreds ( I guess ? ) of them, they are all unique ! That’s part of what make the game interesting for me. It’s way more important to have good build possibilities than having thousands of awesome-looking sets but with only a pair actually ending being used by players because it’s not well balanced and it’s the only “good” ones.

I think the sets look really great, but I think that the Dreadwalker set looks more like something a spellcaster Inquisitor type character would wear, rather than a necromancer, or possibly an Occultist/Necromancer at best (a blood-mage type of necromancer, as exists in some settings). I would consider using it for something along those lines, instead of a pure necromancer, which - if I’ve understood it right - is about Summoning, Cold and… Drain…?

Or simply give it a retexture to dark blue or shades of grey, or maybe even white and bone and shadow/black. I dunno, entirely matter of taste, of course, and it all comes down to how you want to present the necromancer; anyone that will want to heavily deviate from that themselves can always use the Illusionist.

Also, I worry that epics/sets are getting too pigeon-holed or specialized. As someone that’s a fan of themed and quirky builds rather than pure specialization or optimization, very specialized sets just “feels” wrong not because they wouldn’t work with “off-brand” combos, but because if you don’t happen to be that specific combo, it just feels like you’re wasting effort. It’s more psychological than anything, since those items could still be much better than other items, but it’s always annoying when you have something that’s great but that has aspects to it that you’ll never use. Makes it feel like it might as well be restricted by class, which is usually a terrible design by itself (since it hampers emergent gameplay).

Edit: Also, the Corruptor of Souls set is going to get a retexture of it’s boots, right? Because assuming that all of these are full sets and that those boots are part of the set, they really stand out. The entire armor is bark and wood… and then there’s the boots. :stuck_out_tongue: Maybe consider throwing the bark texture on them and cover the studs up with vines? And if the boots aren’t part of the set, please consider adding such a pair of boots that could be used with the set. Absolutely love the set other than that, and the set alone makes me want to play a Necromancer/Shaman instead of the Necromancer/Occultist or Necromancer/Arcanist I was planning.

I absolutely adore the hat of the Luminari Regalia set, although with the hood colour it could be hard to make it work with other armour sets, and the rest of the set looks a bit “busy”. Huge, huge fan of the Silver Sentinel set, save the shoulder pads. Really top-notch. You guy really are the best, and I apologize if I sound overly critical.

Why bother making an extension if new masteries and item sets are going to be so uninspired?
Oh right, money. I love the game and want to support it, but this feels like Immortal Throne all over again.
At least don’t use bright magenta cyan and purple everywhere this time please.

IT had “Dream” as a new mastery which was arguably one of the most used and beloved masteries.

Otherwise, the magenta part, that’s up to each individual i guess.

The question then in another, when it will be released finally??? It’s true, for a very long time, almost a year, already doing it!!!

Estimated release date is Q2/Q3 of 2017. For more info, see: http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51499
