A Necromancer is mainly a manipulator of life and death, and that can be in many ways. Like bringing the dead back, sucking the life-force out of your foes, and, in the case of the golems, creating a new “life”.
I do prefer the Blight Fiend though because it’s very close to the Frankenstein monster, which also fits in the mentality of creating a new “life”.
Dunno if a dragon will show up since Crate is trying to create unique monsters instead of relying solely on fantasy staples.
But depending of how a dragon show up in lore (like as an aetherial abomination or as an extinct race) I can roll with it. Just don’t make a hedgehog with horns and say it’s a dragon because… That’s really dumb.
Actually Stupid Dragon’s post sums it up nicely
Golems are more closely tied to alchemy than to Necromancy. And I don’t think Necromancers “create” life, they just “bring back the dead” - I mean they can’t breath life into what was never alive to begin with. The original Jewish legends of the Golems don’t allude to any form of Necromancy being used.
Although the Blight Fiend is made up from the remains of the dead so it’s excluded from the argument.
The only Golem that’d make any sense out of your list is the Blood Golem.
Necromancy is the art of controlling the spirits of the dead, by bringing them forth, and usually, placing them into a physical form similar to that of which they came from, IE, a corpse.
A Golem is a construct that is imbued with artificial life and a semblance of will.
Necromancers only deal with the dead, not making fake life.
That said, the Blight Fiend is pretty clearly made of corpses, so it’s not really a Golem, as it’s been raised by a Necromancer
It’s still hideous, and I don’t want to stare at that for hours on end. I hope it looks less disgusting in a top down view.
Necromancers can bring dead spirits back from Heaven/Hell/Limbo/etc… so that they can serve them inside a vessel created to house this spirit, which could be anything, from a semi-decomposed corpse, a bunch of bones, or even a construct such as a Golem.
If a Necromancer can reanimate some bones by summoning a dead spirit to it, then what is keeping him from reanimating a clay, iron or flesh humanoid creature, by binding this spirit inside of it?
As for the Fire Golem, it’s a special case, as I recall it having to do with how the lore of the Diablo universe works… something about all life being generated from fire, iron and meat, or something like that…
What’s to stop him from reanimating a golem? Simple, golems aren’t alive in the first place. If they could be reanimated, then they were never a golem in the first place.
It makes me sad some ppl are against perma summons for necro… with arguments in a fantasy setting (its not science ffs)
GD needs the necro to have perma summons. Why? Because it has the best minion AI (and settings to make them passive or aggresive) in modern arpgs (D3 necro lacks pure summoner, PoE seems will never add quality of life and their zombies are stupid outside the Baron helmet use).
-Is Ill Omen exclusively meant to make targets flee or does it do some damage as well?
-Also,
”One of the most powerful techniques bestowed upon his followers by Uroboruuk. By ripping apart the very being of your foe, one can not only inflict grievous harm, but also conjure forth a fragment of their soul to serve you. The resulting spirit is unstable and highly aggressive, which makes it all the more useful in battle.
So corpse based summoning?
-How would DoT from a pet and player interact with each other?
You’re missing the part where I said that the Necromancer could summon a spirit to inhabit the Golem, giving him “life”, which is how I believe the Blight Fiend works.
Now whether you think that makes sense or not, it’s up to you, after all, anything can work in a fantasy setting.
You’re missing the point. Golems have FAKE life, Necromantic Summons have ACTUAL life, drawn back from death. Big difference.
I never said the Blight Fiend was a Golem. It’s pretty visibly made out of corpses, making it a Necromantic Summon, not a Golem. I just said it was hideous, and it didn’t make much sense to believe there were fresh corpses just kicking around everywhere. Skeletons, that makes sense. Fresh corpses… Not so reasonable. Unless, of course, you are prevented from summoning the Fiend until you’ve killed something.
Anything can work in a NEW fantasy setting… When drawing from EXISTING fantasy settings, it behooves you to know what you’re doing.
Why don’t we wait to see what our dear friends at Crate might reveal in the lore of the expansion in regards to necromancy and Blight Fiends.
Not need to speculate and fight before we get our hands on some juicy notes.
If there is none… well we’ll have to come up with our own. Maybe I should start writing some fan-fiction in GD’s world.
Overall, I am quite pleased with everything I have seen so far. I was not overly excited for the necromancer when it got revealed, but the more I get to see it, the more eager I am to get hands on with necromancy.
It fits the theme - if not everyone’s definition of necromancy - and the setting. It is consistent with what we’ve seen from other masteries, factions, and overall lore of the world of Cairn.
I am getting impatient to say the least ! If I wasn’t so keen on letting Crate do it’s magic and take their time to polish and perfect the content, I would probably whine everyday about how long we have to wait …
The last few weeks are going by fast. It only feels like a week that has passed that since the last misadventure. Any way i am really looking forward to see what today’s misadventure is going to be.
