Flashbacks to simpler times. Yup, it’s a Grim Misadventure. Last time, we proudly shared a sample of the upcoming Fangs of Asterkarn soundtrack, recorded for the first time with a live orchestra.
Today, we would like to talk about the major changes coming to the game’s UI. You might be expecting this is for the upcoming Fangs of Asterkarn expansion, but that’s not how we roll. All of our UI improvements are coming in v1.3.0, for all editions of the game, whether you are just checking out the base game or own all the expansions.
The goal here is not to reinvent the wheel. We wanted to keep things familiar and functional. This started with the main screen, which you saw a sneak peek of last time.
The Main Thing
We had a number of issues with the old main menu, particularly when it came to navigating between singleplayer and multiplayer options, and selecting a difficulty or mod. The biggest changes here though, besides layout and a larger scrollable character list, actually came under the hood. A common complaint among players running the game on 4k or on a tv was that while the in-game UI scaled, all of our menus did not. Our response was that this was an unfortunate side-effect of working in an engine originally built in an era where 1080p was a premium and that it would have required a complete UI overhaul. Wellp…
Stash it
It has become common practice to add additional stash tabs with expansions, but we had bigger plans this time around. Your collections deserve something more capable out of the box, and we plan to deliver.
First up, we are introducing two new dedicated transfer stash tabs for storing and organizing all of your Components and Crafting materials. You will find all your materials gathered up for you automatically when the update goes live. With all those items cleared out, everybody should immediately find plenty of newly freed space in their stash.
But what good is this neat organized storage if you still have to manage it? With a new dedicated button in the inventory window you can automatically hoover up all of your materials and components into your shared stash. This can be done from anywhere in the game world. You will not even need to visit a smuggler.
Beyond those two specialized tabs though, we just went ahead and updated all of your tabs with customization options, so you can stay better organized. Have a tab just for your caster collection? Label it accordingly!
But wait, there’s more! Since this UI update applies to all versions of the game, this means that owners of the base game will enjoy 3 additional private tabs per character, instead of the single one they had before. You can also look forward to 4 additional transfer tabs with the Fangs of Asterkarn expansion, putting the total to 10 (+2 Component/Crafting tabs).
We understand that stash mods are popular, and for some of you we expect that will remain the case. Some players simply demand infinity, and our stance on that remains unchanged. But the vastly expanded official storage should be ample for most players!
So we heard you like orbs…
This is sure to be a controversial change, but we had received many requests for it over the years and we took the opportunity to not only clean up the space but also try something new for Grim Dawn.

But fear not, classic UI enjoyers. The classic HUD has been refreshed as well and can be re-enabled from the game options at any time.

And MOAR…
We can’t wait to begin the next chapter of Grim Dawn with you next year with the release of Fangs of Asterkarn, but you can actually look forward to all of this much sooner. We expect to start the v1.3.0 public playtest in January.
We will see you in the new year!
