Grim Misadventure #36: Moar Environments

What I think most people are overlooking here is the fact that you are only level 16 - 18 when you kill the Warden for the first time. The average I have seen people completing the main quest for Alpha is level 16, so assuming you start a new character for Beta, that gives you 14 more levels to attain throughout the Beta storyline. I’m going to go ahead and assume, however, that (as it is in Alpha) we will not make the level 30 cap without farming. Therefore, I see no reason for complaints as to the reasoning of the level cap going up 5 levels, because if you create a new character for Beta, 14 more levels until the next hard cap is more than enough.

Edit: A further assumption I’ll make is that we’ll get to the end of the Beta storyline at level 25 at the most, which gives us 5 levels of farming. It seems right to assume following this, level 35 will be the average end level for most normal difficulty players. This gives us 15 levels over the next two difficulties until expansions are released, and assuming it all pans out as I see it happening, that sounds just fine until the first expansion.

Who said the max level is 50? I read somewhere, but don’t remeber where, the max level at release should be 75.

i read it too, and i still don’t really understand why Crate changes his mind.

but let’s trust them !

first point… I’m not english and for me it isn’t clear if that 75 is related to toon level or materies level, but since I know the max point you can put in a masteries 50, I understood that the 75 in that phrase is related to the toon levels.

The 75 refers to the mastery, further down it talks about char levels up to 200. Obviously the latter is with expansions only, so that probably is true for the mastery level as well.

Either way, the char level 50 is more recent information, so should be considered more reliable.

lol so: what means “mastery level”? Point spent? So mastery max level is 50. Skill points? I think max for a single skill is 16 + 10 given by objects. Where is “75”?

Max level for release will be 50.

The mastery bar (passive stats and unlocks skills) looks like it stops at 50 where it unlocks your final skills but it can still be added to up to level 75.

Games are dynamic and changing things while in development. It is hard to always know how something will work until you get it in-game and playtest it. I originally had the masteries configured such that it did require 75 points to unlock tier 9 skills. However, I came to the conclusion that the number of points required to attain higher tiers was too much of an investment before you got a payoff and made it so that you tended to want to just stay in the first 3-4 tiers and not bother to advance further. This would have been easier to balance if higher tier skills were significantly more powerful and replaced lower level ones but where many are modifiers or totally different skills that expand your arsenal, it was hard to justify making it take so long to unlock them. The pacing felt a lot better at 50. We might change the UI a bit and keep the final skill tier at 50 while continue allowing investment up to 75 to gain attributes.

As for level cap, I think I said it might be 50 in the past but that isn’t set in stone. It is very unlikely that it would be less than 50 but it is possible we might increase it if the expanded scope of the content warrants it. We’ll do whatever makes sense when we get to the end of development.

Cheers medierra, and thanks for the clarification.

Have a good New Years, just don’t drink to much okay

thank you medierra.

Just a note: i don’t know if this is a grim calc issue or a game issue, but I tried to add more and more time points to masteries in the grim calc and I was able to add up to 100 points.

Another great update. Love the look of those catacombs. Man they are dark and mysterious. I love it!

thank you for the explanations, it’s much clearer now

and thank you for the time you spent to explain your choices, it’s always very interesting !

If I start a new character after we get Act II, then yeah I would no longer be reaching the level cap in the Act I area. What I was mainly getting at is that many of my existing characters are level 25 now, and it won’t take long at all for them to hit level 30. Plus I didn’t realize level 50 will only be seen on the hardest difficulty.
That being said, I hope the level 50 thing isn’t carved in stone, and that we can go to level 75 in the expansion(s)…

The skill system is planed to scale up to 200 with expansions. There will be more levels with expansions whether level 50 or higher is max at release,
