Grim Misadventure #59: Factions - Kymon's Chosen

Or you could watch a few like ZiggyD who actually narrated all the dialog during his first play-through of each act in different voices and had a memorable experience seeing the consequences of his choices.

There is a diverse audience for ARPGs (or probably any genre) who don’t all want the same thing. I don’t know what the numbers are for people who enjoy quests / lore and those who skip it entirely but I think both sides represent significant portions of the audience.

For players purely focused on the combat and character progression, we’ve intentionally designed quests so that players can ignore most of them or complete them without reading the dialog and / or finish the objectives before or after talking to the NPC. There is a whole other, significant segment of the audience though that appreciates or even plays for the story and lore and we’d be seriously handicapping the game’s appeal if we cut that out. Because we’ve made the dialog and lore largely optional, this is one of those rare win / win times in design where we can add something for one group that doesn’t diminish the game for the other.

I mean, look at Divinity: Original Sin, it’s much more focused on story and lore and it’s been very successful, so it seems pretty hard to argue that there isn’t a large audience for that.

So, like the quest dialog, if you’re not interested in these updates, feel free to skip them and let those who are interested enjoy.

Feel the burn

Love their outfits. Probable have to pick them based purely on that. Also the lore is great, the world you guys are creating is really interesting!

On deeper thought, I don’t suppose this faction will be linked in any way to the story of Inquisitor Creed? Kymon himself having once been an inquisitor, it might be interesting to see K having taken Creed in after he escaped from the Warden (given that Creed is also aware of Aetherial possession). Just an idea I thought I’d throw out there, seeing as if one looks through my posting history they can see that I predicted the “Warden of Devil’s Crossing” (exact wording, not to brag of course :p) being a boss BEFORE release of alpha.

Seeing those Kymon’s armor sets makes me wish to have transmog in this game. :undecided:

My actual char looks like a color blind clown with bad taste.

You must have missed the time when he said he was doing that for the sake of entertaining and informing his viewers…otherwise he usually skips all the quest dialogue.

Anyway I didnt mean for this to become such a big deal. :o I’m very happy it is in the game, I was just thinking that a large part of the gamebase doesn’t have any interest in it, which is a shame.

Or a future quest where we have to choose between the inquisitor or joining with Kymon’s Chosen. Kymon did abduct and torture the head of his order.

I agree with you that story and quests are important, even in a aRPG. And if it can be done that they are not required to finish the game that is even better.

But mostly I wanted to say that Divinity: Original Sin is more praised for its innovative turn based combat that lets you combine stuff in a fun and logical way than it is for its story.

Good point, although I do wonder if Creed would be aware of this, and even if he is, surely he’d believe it if he were told the Inquisitor-General (or whatever the title is on Cairn) was possessed given that the Aetherials saw fit to posses the warden of an unimportant backwater prison (making it believable that they also had higher ranking persons under their control).

All that can be said for now is that time will tell.

Love these insight’s towards faction’s and the lore behind them :stuck_out_tongue: keep em coming and great work on the game so far :)!

I know direct spoilers are not a thing but will we receive any hints in-game during Act 3 regarding if Empyrion is the actual ‘God’ that Kymon is in contact with? Or will we find out what exactly it is he does converse with, or will that not become a plot point if we align with Kymon?

I love the lore for when you are playing in single player and for when you are with a group and want to blast through the text and get back to the fight that is fine too. Well thought out all arround. Keep building a great world for us to have fun in for years to come.

Nice! Keep up the good work!

Streamers play a bunch of games though, they do that with any lore once they already know it. For those of us who play for enjoyment instead of profit it adds interest and depth to the game.

This is so far the most interesting faction for me. I hope their armors will be available. And that 1h maul in flames as well. Totally love this one.

The mace is the Blessed Torch.

Is already my favorite faction. I love fanatical zealots in fantasy settings.

I assume doing the “Old Scars” quest will put you on a disadvantage with this faction?

Thankfully, word of your assisting the Order in Old Arkovia has not reached the ears of the Chosen.

Because the Steps of Torment is such a pivotal piece of content, we do not want to discourage players who wish to join Kymon’s Chosen just because they also want access to the challenge dungeon.

Completing the Old Scars quest will not impact your ability to join with either faction.

I arrived in Homestead and have been running around there for a bit. Where do I find the K. Chosen? I don’t need the exact location, but a general hint would be good.

Also the Leader of the Black Legion invites to serve them. Will this immediately mean fully enrolling with them? I don’t want to do that.

Thanks for the any tips.
