Grim Misadventure #99: Introducing the Crucible

Hi Crate. Thank you for nice game.

My request to V1.0.0.5

  • PRM, Phantasmal Blades, Forcewave, Cadence need more buff
  • Add Chaos/Vitality legendary set which has Occultist skill+2
  • Add augments which have attack speed, reduce skill energy cost
  • Add relic which has reduce life leech resistance. now only Haunt has this skill

well, you did not support it as much. For one that is pretty much the lowest possible tier out there and for another it is over a year later than the ones eligible

Apart from that I am not even sure that is what the OP actually meant… I read it more like a ‘if I only had bought it from Crate directly’ while ignoring the fact that the timing was way off still…

Hmm. I missed the KS boat myself, bought Loyalist tier from the site (2013 and when it cost 85$, now it’s 75$ I believe) and at least 7 (I think) Steam copies and I think it feels zero kinds of shitty.

[UNLOCKED] $520k - SURVIVAL MODE!We’ll create a new gameplay mode that will be free for all backers (KS or Website Pre-order).* In survival mode players will fight to stay alive against increasingly difficult waves of monsters.* It will release sometime after the game so as not to delay development.

My guess is they would rather take your heat than the heat they would potentially get from their KS backers for giving away free to people who didn’t support around that critical time-frame something that they may consider as promised to them, not us.

Sure it would be cool if they did but I don’t blame them for respecting the KS backers and honoring the deal.

And yes mamba was right, the person you quoted wasn’t referring to it in the manner you were thinking.

I can appreciate how you feel and I’m sorry for that but I don’t think it’s quite accurate to look at it that way. I think you’re looking at it as some arbitrary cutoff where some earlier people get a free thing while other’s who also bought the game far in advance of release don’t get it.

The big distinction though is that it was offered during the KS as a stretch goal to motivate backers to pledge more money before the campaign ended. Once the KS was over, survival mode was a thing we were committed to doing. There was no option after that for people to increase their payment to raise more funding. So really, a lot of those people already paid extra money for Crucible by upping their backer levels to reach the stretch goal before the campaign ended. It’s being given to them for meeting that goal, not just for supporting the game earlier.

To a lesser extent, that was also a time when no playable version of Grim Dawn existed or was close to existing. It was the time of greatest risk, when there was a real chance things could have gone wrong and Grim Dawn might have never been released. By the time Grim Dawn was on Early Access, there was a playable game and, while there was a lot of development left, the risk of not finishing it at that point was pretty low.

Is it fair? I don’t know. I mean, I think it’s fair that it was offered to a group of people within a certain time-period for meeting a funding goal. Is it fair that some people who might have contributed to the KS didn’t hear about it in time? Maybe not but that’s how things go… It’s hard to always do things in a way that is going to be 100% fair to everyone at the present and also in the future. Sometimes fair for one group may not be considered fair for another. I’m sure some KS backers would feel slighted if we opened this up to people who backed years later.

So I mean, I wouldn’t look at it as a measure of who supported more / early enough. We put out the Hidden Path free content as a thank-you to everyone. Crucible though is a direct product of KS backers reaching a stretch goal.

As you say, Crucible is also a fairly significant amount of work and more than we could afford to invest on something that would be given out to everyone in Early Access for free. Half our total sales happened during Early Access, whereas the number of people getting Crucible for free is about 3% of our total sales.

Grim Dawn was a financial success but around half of the profit from it went back into funding further development to increase scope and make it to the final release. So really, we’ve already spent a ton of money adding to Grim Dawn and the remaining money needs to be budgeted for projects that we’re going to sell to raise money for future growth and the next round of games after that.

Can you play with your friends in the Crucible? It worries me you cannot since you have to access this from the Main Menu and Zantai’s post did not mention Crucible Multiplayer. My character is based around co-op teamplay, not me fighting by myself. :undecided:

Yes, you can play it in multiplayer.

Can you guys set up a pre-purchase option for this? Or must it be ready before you can put it in Steam’s DLC? Just wondering, it’s coming soon enough that it doesn’t matter.

So, only KS backers are getting Crucible for free? Higher-tier Patron or Loyalist (since 04/2013) editions have to buy it also? It’s not that I care about those few extra dollars that I can throw here, I just want to have a clear view.

Also a bit offtopic, but what’s up with the map download, the topic from developer discussion subforum has vanished and I’ve seen no continuation/solution to it.

The Crucible will only be free for those that backed during or before the kickstarter. The supporter packs will not give you access to the crucible for free.

You mean the 5 expansion packs you have planned right? Because Grim Dawn is going to expand forever right?

I’ve seen many DLCs in my dreams, you can trust me, it’ll be a hit for many decades to come.

I am so excited for this!

I am also in a similar boat whereby, by the time the KS for Grim Dawn had ended, I still had not discovered Kick Starter as a thing. This was unfortunate for a number of reasons, as I would have loved to contribute to the funding of GD, one of my top two favourite games of all time and consequently, as I will not be receiving The Crucible for free.

I sat here, reading your response to constructive feedback regarding this payment model and my respect for you and your team has only increased, Medierra for the respect that you show your community is also unwavering. You go to lengths to provide community members with an insight into the reality and hi’s and low’s of being part of an organisation that develops games and you do so from a considered and informative standpoint.

I only want more content from CRATE and your team and if a further X amount of dollars is going to contribute to that happening, in the grand scheme of things, I am more than happy to play my part.

We see it everywhere, players comparing their monetary investment to the amount of hourly enjoyment they receive from the game they purchased. One could see this as a fair way of weighing up one’s investment. I say, by all means, do so. There are well more than a handful of people that frequent this forum, myself included, that would be happy to show you just how many hours of enjoyment, happiness, sadness, triumph and defeat that Grim Dawn has provided. Ask these people, if they had the opportunity to present X amount more dollars for more of these types of hours trawling through new content, would they do so.

I don’t think I need to answer that question.

Keep doing what you’re doing, Medierra and co. If it’s working for you, that brings me a lot of happiness. I hope that it brings you guys a lot of happiness to hear from one of your faithful, that it certainly is working for me and many others!

Shouldn’t this be part of the game? at least in the kickstarter was advertised as a in-game mode, cutting something from the game in a DLC kinda sucks tho I love the game and I’ll buy it anyway. Can’t wait to see the expansion or maybe more I’ll buy all of them. the amount of epicness in this game is too damn high.

You should have it automatically from Steam (some do not however), no idea about GOG.

It is available from Humble though for those who are entitled.

No, it was never advertised as a free addition for everyone. From the KS (emphasis mine)

/Hitting like button for both of ya!

About how long will each wave take (with an “average” build, obviously different builds will clear faster)? I assume as the waves get harder, they will also be longer.

If you die, do you always start back over at wave one?

Will there be “check points” like after waves (such as every wave, or every 5th or 10th wave) that you can log out can keep your progress or do you have to see how far you get in one game session?

I bought the two-key Kickstarter bundle. Will the person who recieved the gifted key also get this DLC for free?

I assume so, it was true for the other bonus stuff so far
