This probably makes me the most cliche’ young dude, but aside from modding and gaming, i’m pretty obsessed with guitar. Was hoping to make a career out of it at some point, but I realized trying to make money off guitar made guitar into a chore.
If there are any modern metal guitarists here, show yourself. (In the video, I twitch. I have Tourette’s Syndrome.)
I played guitar for a few years in high school. Mostly just grunge band stuff. Wasn’t very good, either. (shocker!)
Your solo sounded great, man. Wouldn’t have even noticed the ticks if you hadn’t mentioned them, to be honest. Some guys really get into the music, especially during solos and make all kinds of gestures/faces. That Advanced Entropy vid was excellent. Very nice song!
Hey man thanks for both the listen and the compliment. The only thing that matters with the guitar is the combined melodies you put into it. There comes a point when a shredder isn’t even a guitarist anymore, just a wankery tremolo picker. Point being, you don’t need deathcore level chops to be great at guitar. You just need to develop an understanding of moods and melodies. Also, not trying to be al sage-like and give you tips, that would be crazy patronizing. Just some of the theory I follow personally.

I was self-taught on guitar at age 16 and for ten years it was my dream to be a musician. I wrote music and lyrics and wanted to record a demo to shop around. Growing up in the classic rock era of the '70s and '80s, I focused primarily on that sort of guitar style, along with some metal and lots of blues (I was a huge blues fan). When I was 18, I came down with meningitis and it damaged the auditory nerves in both ears. This caused a slow deterioration of my hearing to the point where I became pretty much tone-deaf at age 26 and had to give up my dream of being a guitarist in a rock band. I was told I was really good by some folks who had plenty of experience in touring bands although I was never satisfied with my skill level. I haven’t played for years now due to my hearing loss but I can certainly identify with you when you say you have an obsession with the guitar. I still dream of writing, recording and playing music but it will never happen for me. I still have boxes of old guitar magazines from that era and I still have my three guitars (they’re like children to me and I’ll never part with them). My advice is to never give up on your dream. If your goal is to play professionally, give it all you’ve got…but always be sure you keep it fun, otherwise you’ll burn-out. Focus on building your chops and creating and you’ll find opportunities to share your music with others. Good luck!
