[Help Needed] Mortar + auto-attack pyromancer

First of all, I’m a noob when it comes to this genre. Now that is out of the way:

I made a pyromancer since I dropped 2 Deviltongues and tried to run a dual-wield, fire/chaos build utilizing mines/BWC (WITHOUT the expansion :undecided:). It got me to the end of ultimate with DPS of ~30K.

Since I’m dying a lot, I found that mortar + kiting and auto-attacking worked better for me so I switched to that, but now I’m not using the occultist tree at all since I need all the points to make mortar good enough. Should I go pure demolitionist?

This is the final build I came up with:
Grimtools build

It’s too defensive so I may end up getting Magi or Ulzuin’s Torch constellations. I don’t know how to optimize the damage or if I should invest in occultist tree. What would you change in that build for maximum damage without affecting survivability much?

As you’ve noticed, trying to build into Mortar Trap and Fire Strike is very point-intensive, even with tons of + skills to Demolitionist :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways, you need/want more Offensive Ability. ~2150, even with Flashbang’s DA strip isn’t great. Try the Survivor’s Ingenuity Augment from Devil’s Crossing. Hawk and Chariot of the Dead are good sources from devotion.

You can afford to cut down on overcapping Blast Shield to 12/12 (or slightly lower like 10/12), Vindictive Flame to 16/16 (or 9/16), Flashbang to 12/12 (or slightly lower like 10/12).

Consider Thermite Mine for resist reduction. Even 1 point for “drop-and-forget”, if something steps on them, great, if not, it didn’t cost you much time.

Devotion-wise, try to fit Elemental Storm in for more resist reduction.

There might be another way you can make a gunner/Mortar Trap build work but keep in mind that it is purely conjecture/untested (lots of explaining stuff ahead):
The idea at a basic level is to stack large amounts of Physical damage converted to Fire damage. The ramifications of focusing on this mean:

 • Large amounts of Mortar Trap’s Physical is converted meaning less focus on getting skill levels (besides getting that 2nd Mortar).
 • Temper’s flat Physical becomes a secondary source of Fire.
 • Your weapons do close to all of their base damage as Fire.
 • As a side bonus, Explosive Strike does close to all of it’s Physical damage as Fire.
 • Meteor Shower becomes even more potent if you go for it.

The question is how to do this, 2-handers start with 45%, adding in a component adds another 10% and then using an amulet like Empowered Alazra’s Ruby adds another 10% for 65%. Not bad but we want more.

If we use a pair of pistols, they combined have 30% (15% from each weapon), a component in each adds 20% more and finally an amulet adds another 10% for 60%. Worse than a 2-hander.

Well, the answer is, we use a special kind of weapon - Francis’ Gun.

Francis’ Gun is one of the placed rares in Act 1 like Hevill’s Greatsword. Like crafted rares (like Master’s Spellblade), it can roll with one prefix or one suffix but not both. Take a look at this to see how much conversion we can pick up with it.

To sum it up:

 • 30% from each Gun, so 60%.
 • Another 20% from components.
 • 10% from Empowered Alazra’s Ruby.

This nets us an impressive 90% at base, above average rolls give us the potential to go slightly higher or even meet 100% (though this needs really good rolls).

It’s rough but this is what I’ve come with for a final build using your MIs. If you upgrade to AoM, you’ll probably want to go Demolitionist/Inquisitor and look out for the Dagallon set.
I have applied the things that you have suggested and I think I understand making builds better now. Thanks!

Since I put 50 points in Occultist, I can’t undo that without the expansion, which I don’t have (or using a char editor but I’m not a big fan of that). Those points are here to stay until I get the expansion, hopefully soon.

Devotion-wise, I ended up picking more %crit dmg now that I have high-ish OA. I also ditched Tree of Life for the Kraken for extra attacking speed and even more crit dmg (I couldn’t grab the Magi…)

Here’s how it looks like now: Mortar Autoattack

EDIT: If I’m not ultimately happy with my build, I’ll surely test the fire conversion one, if I haven’t upgraded to AoM by then.

Any additional comment on this build?

You need stun resist and freeze resist.
For stun grab boots with thunderstruck … of kings.
For freeze take one or two frozen heart on your rings.

Consider the handguard of justice, huge flat fire damage, attack speed, life and pierce resist.

Mark of divinity is very good but the cool down is long, you took the ghoul devotion, it’s a good alternative, you can remove mark of divinity and take pyroclasm mark.

I love mortar, but for me it’s a one point wonder, only one point in each synergy, the bonus do the rest. It’s a good way to proc devotion, attach it meteor shower from the ulzuin torch devotion and enjoy.

You can reassign your points in solael witchfire, second rite and possession.

Your devotion are only defensive, take at least 3 offensive devotion like ulzuin torch, solael witchblade and magi, or if you prefer the chaos side, take dying god, solael witchblade, and wendigo.

You need more OA, at least 2200.
A great devotion is hawk, for the offensive ability and -10% cunning for ranged weapons for only 3 points.
Take behemoth at 3, if you need life you have crossroad chaos and order.
A good devotion is revenant : nrj leech (fire strike is expensive), health, ADCH, and attack speed.

I think you can take 3 offensive constellations, you can go for fire build, the ulzuin is made for this. Meteor shower from ulzuin torch is great, bind it to mortar and enjoy.
I love mortar, but i think one point in each synergy is sufficient, the goal is to proc meteor shower.

You can remove behemoth 3 or ghoul and keep chariot, 2 healing devotion are sufficient, and go for ulzuin torch.

Think of having at least 60% resist stun, and you can put 2 frozen heart in your rings for freeze resist.
Try to have pants : thunderstruck … of kings (health and stun resist).
You can equip golemborn greaves, +3 temper, health and plenty of pierce resist.
