How assign skill to right mouse button

Hi
I am new to Grim Dawn and liking it thus far
Still at the very start and figuring out controls etc

Is it possible to assign an attack skill such as Forcewave to the right mouse button?
If so, how do I do it?

More generally, is the rmb used in Grim Dawn?
And if so what do experienced players use it for?

Thanks

Just right-click the RMB slot (or any other) and then select from the available skills etc.

I used to assigned ranged attacks to RMB, whereas LMB was for my melee attack. To the other slot I often assigned Move To.

I have switched to play with a gamepad as Crate recently updated this feature.

Thanks eisprinzessin

I had not noticed the slots on the toolbar
just learning

If you are playing a shooty build or a caster build where your attack is a spell you absolutely want your left click to be move to. It will save you a lot of headaches later on. Also be aware that if you press the Y key on your keyboard it will scroll down to a second task bar where you could put your passive auras to give you more room on the main bar for activated skills.

Thanks Woofknight

I did read something about the ‘move to’ command; but at this point I dont really understand what that is about.
I’ll keep what you said in mind as I level up; I’m still in the starting area with a soldier - level 9 I think - so just beginning.
Taking my time to figure out the controls and remap them to suit me; farming a bit to get some gear and levels so I dont get killed - haven’t gone down yet.
I may stay in the starting area for a bit and run one of each class up to level 10 or so to see how they play before fixing on a build for my first playthrough

At what point will I get access to a shared stash?

Once you have access to Devil’s Crossing ( When the guard will open the gate. ) go through the gate and go to the upper left corner. There is a smuggler, that is where you will find your normal stash and shared stash.

So let me explain it to you. You move with your left mouse button right? So if you have a shooty build and your shooting attack is bound to the button that is also your movement button it makes it frustrating to safely move around enemies. If you click an empty space then you will move there. If you click an enemy you won’t move, you will shoot him instead. There are many points in the game where this can lead to death because you click the enemy rather than the position you wanted to move to or a place of safety. With a melee build that is unnecessary as, while you want to sometimes move away or around to better position, stopping and attacking is not as dangerous if you have done your melee build properly.

I’d actually advise always playing veteran. Now normal may seem desirable because it is easier but if you intend to play through elite and eventually ultimate you will do yourself a disservice if you choose normal because the jump from normal to elite is quite rough. If you are playing the slightly harder veteran mode the jump won’t be so difficult.

After you complete the quest under burial hill you go back to devil’s crossing and talk to Bourbon and he says you need to talk to the people in devil’s crossing. You talk to the soldier near the gate and he lets you in then you go up some stairs and there is a smuggler at the top. He is your stash guy. Both shared and personal to the character.

Thanks Illius & Woofknight
I understand the ‘move to’ command now and the stash etc
I started out on veteran and I’m managing fine so far - no deaths
Still to complete Burial Hill and get access to Devils Crossing; taking my time to get a feel for the game; so far I like it

It will only get better.

Out of curiousity what character classes are you starting with? Also it is okay to die. You most likely will die in your first playthrough a bunch of times but it is all a learning experience. My first character has 110 deaths on her card but it taught me a lot.

My first character is a soldier level 11; just finished Burial Hill.
I plan to stick with soldier for a while more to get a feel for it, then maybe run a demolitionist through Burial Hill and see how that works - etc.
I havent any idea yet what kind of build I want to play - just settling in and having a look; overall I like the game so far.

You’ll need to play a lot further than that to get an idea of what the classes are like. I’d say if you are focused on a couple skills, and willing to put a lot of points into the class mastery, then level 20 is about as early as you can be to figure out if you like a particular skill and about level 40 before you get an idea about a class combo.

That said, just have fun, and don’t be too quick to dismiss a character. A lot changes as you level up.

As someone else said it is really hard to get a feel for how much you like a character before about level 50. Playing just soldier at the moment I could see if you didn’t like it but when you add another class into the mix it completely changes how it feels to play the character. Also the soldier feels really slow to start with especially his movement speed if you aren’t using the blitz skill.

I think you’d be better off deciding what build you want to play melee/ranged/caster and if you want to apply damage with weapons or spells. The downside of starting with soldier is that you lack an area of effect (AoE) which slows down the game if you have to individually kill each enemy. There is forcewave and it is a great skill but it takes a lot of getting used to. AoE allows you to affect multiple enemies at once. Best options for AoE in early game are occultist, demolitionist, nightblade and shaman. The other classes get good AoE later but not until you are deeper in the skill tree. I’d suggest putting time into getting a feel for one or two classes in combination rather than playing all the classes up to level 10 or something because you won’t get a good idea really. Play how you want to play but your time might be better served learning the mechanics of a single archetype rather than multiple single classes. Just my thoughts from my experience.

Thanks for the helpful replies guys

Yes I intend to persist with my soldier for a while more. I’ve been running him as a combination of rifle and two-handed melee.
Now I will switch to one-handed and shield for a bit too see how that goes.

Yes the reason I chose soldier first is because I generally like melee characters. My experience of using Forcewave is that it functions very like an AoE and can take out a gang of common monsters in one shot. The trick is to manage how they come at you so they get bunched up a bit. It’s not so good if you get surrounded. I bind it to my RMB and use it when I get up close to a gang - boom!

Before I finished Burial Hill I pushed some way into Wightmire. I didn’t realize at that time that the world is continuous and open. I ran into a gang with a champion or boss that nearly did me in. In the heat of battle I couldn’t remember what key I had assigned to potions - lol - because I didn’t have to use any potions up to that point. But I survived! I think because my weapon has a life steal effect - 6% of damage dealt. So everytime I got a good hit in I got a good heal too. That was a good lesson; I will be keeping an eye out for that effect. keeping him alive is just a little challenge for me that keeps me focussed. I’m not actually playing this character hardcore.

Hello everyone! I am obviously a newcomer to Grim Dawn and have read this page from top to bottom and your message here eludes to a difference in assigning left and right click behavior, but I am still unsure/confused so I have the following questions.
Is it possible, and if so, how, to assign melee to left-click and casting to right-click?

Welcome to the forum. :slightly_smiling_face:

Woofknight hasn’t been around for a long time, but what exactly is the problem? As said you can put a melee skill on the LMB, but you may attack a foe when you just meant to move position. You just have to be careful where the mouse cursor is pointing. There’s no problem in assigning a casting skill to the RMB.
