I am in Ascendant difficulty, killed the dread already, and am searching Kurnhold. But it’s a pretty big place and I don’t see anything on the map.
Where in Kurnhold is it supposed to be?

Next to the altar
Hmm. It’s missing from your screenshot. Here is the same location for me:
I really don’t know what’s going on. Are you on the latest patch?
Nevermind, I figured it out. It was only added in the patch last week and because I was on GOG i hadn’t updated. (I’m used to patches coming out once every 6 months.)
Edit to avoid spamming thread further: thanks for the help
Can identify. Used to play on GOG.
Checked with several characters.
The orb appears even with a character who newly entered Ascendant mode and never went to either Kurnhold or fought the Dread.
So to sum up some of the complaints in this thread:
Seems to me Crate has been listening to us pretty well. I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays now i have the patch properly installed. ![]()
So i’m arrived at Kurnhold and still every Sphere/Remnant (Devils Crossing or Kurnhold) is doing nothing for me. It is telling me only, that it seeks the Master of this world?!
Playing on Steam with newest Patch without any Mods and have no other Probs with the game at all. Even have checked all files via the Steam option, nothing found.
So it seems to be a bug in my game, isn’t it? Or do i miss anything? (Even tried another 100 char and same behaviour).
If I remember correctly it was mentioned there is a bug in all of the translations that do not show the option to disable the Dread and should be fixed in 1.3.0.7, which is coming soon (maybe?). If you are using a translation then that might be why you don’t see the text.
THIS!
Big thx you!! Never ever i have checked this!
But frankly it is time to go back to the english version anyway. I only playing GD in my natural language for all the Lore notes and dialogues, which is nice for the very first time youplay the campaign but later on…you know what i mean ![]()
Just had my first fight with it in my initial forays into Ascendant. Was deathly afraid (HC) because I didn’t know what to expect. But it turns out most everything is fully dodgeable. Although, having a lot of space available seems kind of mandatory. I got lucky and it spawned in the open fields of The Conflagraton. So a bit of kiting first to see all the attacks and then just run it around to death. Got hit once by the Petrify nova, but 31% Petrify resist was enough to move away before getting hit by anything.
No idea how one would fight it if it spawned in some random cellar or the Dermapterran tunnels…
The Sunder melee combo it does looks RIPy is hell. No desire in trying to stand in it and seeing how much damage it deals ![]()
Do I have to enable the Dread at the tentacle-bucket? Just cleared two rogue-like dungeons, Theodin, and Beronath (plus some unique monsters along the way) and haven’t seen it. No ascension altar. On my other character it’d spawn, but extremely infrequently. Is RNGesus just looking out for me?
I have no problem killing him with my meme rifle/pet Cabalist build (in my case, the dog turned into a demon a long time ago). The main thing is to gear up properly and pick the right devotions.
No, it’s just pretty rare in the current patch. And pretty random.
I’ve had it spawn pretty quickly and appear several times, but also had runs where it just never showed despite a half dozen nemeses showing up.
Yeah, he is significantly easier to deal with when playing any sort of ranged build because his most deadly stuff always happens in melee range. He can catch up with the player but that only lasts until he starts his attack pattern.
Since we can now deactivate the Dread at will, I’d love to see the spawn rate increased. I like fighting it a lot.
This can be done using an altar. However, if the drop from this harbinger has been obtained, I don’t see the point in wasting time on it.
Spawning him with the Altar is way too expensive. It costs 1 Celestial Essence, a resource that isn’t easy to farm because it has 30 different potential spawn points for the chest. The only alternative seems to be farming Morgoneth, who has a 10% chance to drop one. That’s not fun at all.
Increasing the spawn rate of the Dread doesn’t hurt anything because you can deactivate him whenever you want. And the benefit of him appearing more, apart from the fun fight, is the fact that he drops 2 Soul Fragments, which is the equivalent of 16 Soul Echoes. I consider killing the Dread absolutely worth it just for that.
Yeah it’s way too expensive to add him with the Altar IMO. Wouldn’t mind adding him to Ultimate but at that price? No thanks.
Just to add, I was full clearing the map. Starting in the Rotten Croplands, Dermapterran Hive, Gruesome Harvest. Then did Port Valbury Outskirts and just as I was cleaning up the rest of the Conflagration, Dread spawned just behind the barn near the end.
Along the way, I killed, IIRC:
4-5 Nemeses (2x Aleks, 1x Kuba, 1x Underking, 1x Benny)
A Tempest Totem
Ravna, Amalgamation, Herald of Stars bosses
A lot of heroes
before Dread spawned. No Celestial Essence on the altar. So yeah, at base, it can take a while to spawn. Still, using Celestial Essences for Dread farming seems extremely wasteful.
My character reached level 100 doing Candle District in Malmouth. I switched to Ascendant mode right after clearing the base before the beginning of Steelcap District. No nemesis with anything. No totems in Steelcap. Nothing on altar. Got the Dread to spawn about halfway through the area (right by Rictor’s Stash). So there apparently is a lot of RNG involved in this thing.
