How often do you make a backup?

If you are using local saves, how often do you backup your game files? Just curious. I typically do one every month or so.

I use cloudsave but also download the savea and back up to a usb drive once a week.

When I’m scared of losing something I just did.

Back when I had more time to play I backed up after each session. Now, maybe once a week or two.

Realistically how often does a crash make you lose all your progress?

It depends on players. I never have crushes but some say they have crashes quite regularly (I only have freezes while loading which don’t bother me). Anyway, I don’t think it’s about a game crash but data / disk corruption of some sort, complete system breakdown etc.
Also statistics such as ā€˜it happens to 1 out of every 10000 players’ don’t really matter to you once you lost i.e. 1000 hours of progress because of not backing stuff up (we read such messages a few times on the forum)

Depends on how much I played recently, I guess. If I played for 2 hours in a week, there’s no particular reason to make a backup. Unless I got some cool items in the process, that is!

That said, luckily I didn’t have to resort to backup saves due to ā€œlosing progressā€ or something. But I still do them of course. This should also apply to your other digital data that is of value to you, of course =)

Of course, better to back up your whole drive(s). I’m more cautious recently because

  • I lost 1 year of data on my phone a few months ago (some old Blackberry) on which I note everything because I got lazy with back-ups at same point

  • I temporarily lost access to my external drive but fortunately I was able to regain it after some googling

  • my neighbor who got me into Grim Dawn lost his save completely, we don’t know what happened there

Crash-to-desktop with local saves: you might lose whatever you literally just did in-game. Yer not gunna lose all your progress.

Full system hard crash/freeze, the mouse does not respond, the keyboard does not respond and you must force a shutdown/reboot: This has more potential to incur such data loss. Anyway, if this type of crash is occurring then you have bigger problems to worry about (possibly) and should be reviewing your crash logs in Event Viewer to attempt to discover what is ailing your system.

I don’t back saves up unless I’m tinkering with them. Guess I don’t deem them essential.

After every session.

Life experience, I guess…

I never do backup’s.

I do the totally opposite - delete all saves to start from scratch as I find it more interesting.
Probably doing it more often than I should…
