How to face tank “Reaper of the lost” the Barrowholm nemesis successfully with a 2H build

// UPDATE NOTICE: THIS THREAD HAS BEEN UPDATED SINCE PATCH 1.0.5.0 //

// SCROLL ALL THE WAY DOWN THE THREAD FOR THE UPDATED BUILD //

So, i’ve been testing out the barrowholm nemesis and his attacks. For those of

you who’ve never heard of the barrowholm nemesis, his name is,

“Reaper of the lost” and he can be unlocked by betraying barrowholm. This boss

is only available in the dlc called, “Ashes of Malmouth.” To betray barrowholm,

simply get to barrowholm and talk to igrid. Then choose the negative dialogue

options to cause him to fight you. After that, achieve nemesis status over

barrowholm, done.

Okay, so time to dive into the discussion of what his attacks and possible

attacks are based on my observations. Upon fighting him, I noticed that his

damage wasn’t very high AT FIRST. I thought he was easy and it didn’t seem to

much of a nemesis boss fight. But I was wrong. He ended up killing my shaman

warder build over 4 times until I finally was able to experience all of his attacks

and buffs after fighting him a few times. That was with over 3k DA, over 3k armor, 100% damage absorption and 19k health. Here’s what I noticed:

  1. He seems very weak until he summons all of his ghosts
  2. He hit’s VERY hard when he summons his ghosts.
  3. His ghosts seem to give him a magic orb type of buff which than follows with him hitting extremely high into the 10k range for a few hits.
  4. He sometimes misses his hits more than expected oddly enough and even without gear that has chance to avoid mele attacks bonuses.
  5. He heals when his health is low.
  6. He has a lower heath pool than Grava’Thul from what I can see.
  7. He quickly becomes weak again after killing his ghostly phantoms.

So you would think he’d be pretty hard. And he is BUT he isn’t ACTUALLY that

hard. Here’s how I successfully face tanked him with my warder 2h:

  1. I made sure I had 100% armor absorption. This is a must.
  2. I made sure I had 3k DA. I would say 2,900 DA as a minimum.
    3 I had 3k armor. I recommend 2,900 armor or higher.
  3. Make sure you have a good amount of life steal and health restored abilities from devotions and gear etc. This is what will help you survive tremendously!
  4. I had an okay amount of OA. It was at 2100 which seemed perfectly fine.
  5. Have a good amount of dps. 30k dps or more should be fine.
  6. I can confirm that he does indeed do a lot of pierce damage. Make sure that’s at 80% and even more if you can. Mine was at 84% + 7% pierce resistance. I sacrificed 2k worth of health for it and believe me it was a game changer.
  7. Make sure you have 17k health minimum or more. I had 17.4k health when I was fighting him.
  8. When he buffs up with those soul orbs from his phantoms it seems like he does a mix of bleed, vitality, a huge amount of physical and like I said before pierce damage. So have 80% bleed and vitality resistance or more also. Some physical resistance will be very useful to.

I will update the post with my build using grimcal shortly after this post. I will just tell you my devotions from the constellation that i’ve chosen in the mean time:
-Wolverine
-Ghoul
-raven
-dydrad
-tortoise
-Eel
-chariot of the dead
-crab: 3 points into it for the ability
-Rhowans crown: 3 points into it for the ability
-Targo the builder
-Tempset
-Ulo the keeper of the waters: 3 points for the ability

  • I had one point in the starting shrine for the 5% of health boost but you can do whatever you would like to with that extra point.

Armor sets and class:

I am using full ultos set for my warder build. I can recommend soldier/necro

because it has a good attack damge converted to health beginning skill. This is

an optional class that i’ve experimented with a little. You may be able to get by

with a forcewave build using mythical justice set etc.

Now for the strategy:

The strategy is pretty simple now thanks to my findings. All you’re going to have

to do is facetank him, but when he summons his phantoms immediately target

them because he will become super buffed from that ghostly orb ability the

phantoms release upon him with and he may start wailing on you for 10k

a hit because of that buff. The quicker you kill his phantoms then the quicker he

is going to become weak again. The good news is you don’t have to move when

he summons them because those phantoms give you an absolutely absurd amount of

attack damage converted to health bonus from your ADCTH skills, abilities and

gear. Now you’re able to facetank him with a 2H weapon successfully.

Congratulations!

I will upload my build on this thread very soon.

Note:

Some nightblade builds may be able to kill him quickly enough before he even buffs up such as nightblade/arcanist or cold builds.

But your chance of being killed or one shotted is very very high. I was never into glass cannon style builds because of the survivability issues. Yes, you still

may be able to get away with killing him though.

The build:

Update:

I tried out my 2H build on him today and successfully face tanked him without dying.

I also made 2 changes:

  1. I put 1 point into decorated soldier for the extra 4 point bonus
  2. I took off the extra point in the crossroad devotion which was +5% health and moved it over to Targo the builder which will make 6 points into that devotion now. Strangely enough it gave me more health which is now 17.5k and +20 more defense. The slight health gain might be a bug but it works. 6 points is the maximum amount of bonuses in the Targo the builder devotion before the 7th point which is the ability.

This build can face tank some of the most hardest bosses and nemesis’s in the game on ultimate. Some are:

  1. Gabal’Thunn the visage of madness: boss
  2. ekket’zul, progenitor of darkness: boss
  3. Grava’Thul the voiddrinker: nemesis
  4. Reaper of the lost: nemesis
  5. The sentinel: boss
  6. Kubacabra: nemesis
  7. Loghorrean, the Voice of Ch’thon: boss
  8. Valdaran, the Storm Scourge: nemesis
  9. Benn’Jahr, the Colossal: nemesis
  10. Shar’Zul, Harbinger of Chaos: boss
  11. Moosilauke, the Chillwind: nemesis
  12. Fabius “the Unseen” Gonzar: nemesis
  13. Zantarin, the Eternal: nemesis
  14. The Master of Flesh ~ Theodin Marcell: boss
  15. Gargabol, Heart of the Wild: boss

Some bosses and nemesis’s that I haven’t really tested:

  1. The Iron Maiden: nemesis
  2. Rashalga, The Mad Queen: boss
  3. Avatar of Mogdrogen: ultra boss - I haven’t yet come to a conclusion on whether or not he would be difficult for this build.

Bosses this character may have trouble facetanking:

  1. Ravager: ultra boss - I believe he’s about 10 times harder than the reaper of the lost nemesis version of him.
  2. Lokarr: ultra boss - This build can only facetank him for a short duration I believe

Crucible:
Can complete 150 waves on gladiator difficulty. I haven’t tested to see if it can reach wave 170. I’m confident that it can though.

So as you can see, the reaper of the lost nemesis boss wasn’t actually too difficult after all for a 2H build. I felt compelled in a good way to make this article because I

haven’t found any good reliable source of information on the reaper of the lost nemesis. I thought he was a very unique nemesis and he should be made

known to all grim dawn fans and players. The reaper of the lost is now my favorite nemesis to go head to head with.

Update:
I changed the ring on the build. You should be at 80% or more for all stats but stun. Grimtools is not calculating vitality resistance properly. That should also be at 80%. Just ignore that stat on grim tools.

Update:
I’ve made a couple changes. Now the fight is even easier:

  • Made augment changes.
  • Now using “Targo the builder” skill.
  • Now using golem greaves

Well boys and gals, i’m happy to say that you can full on face tank Grava’Thul with this build through his nullification ability. You can also full on face

tank reaper of the lost now too regardless of his phantoms being around him. Kubacabra and aleksander are not a challenge. When against Grava’Thul

just make sure you have your permanent procs on the second action bar and your abilities on the first. Also make sure you have scroll down and up set

to your mouse wheel - this is very important so you can toggle your procs on quickly while you’re nullified. Rinse and repeat. Reaper of the lost shouldn’t

be a problem anymore even when his phantoms are up. Just make sure you time your heal properly when he summons them if you feel the need to.

I may post a youtube video here to show you guys that this is indeed legit and possible. Have fun!

Update:

Take 2 points out of scars of battle in the soldier class. It’s unnecessary, and put them in primal bond to max it out. You should get an extra 1% more damage absorption and 1% extra less damage from beasts. It made a difference.

I have been receiving posts that wanted me to try out kraken with this 2H build and to use olren rage. I took out the 3 points in crab temporarily just to

test out krakens bonuses and the difference was from wearing a bullet proof vest to wearing just a t-shirt. He will get utterly destroyed by reaper of the

lost regardless of higher OA and damage. As soon as I put the 3 points back into crab and respecced back into primal bond, he was a piece of cake to

face tank again. This build boasts a base of 40k DPS already and 50k with buffs proc’d so damage isn’t really a problem to begin with. Crab is crucial for the

damage caused by the wraiths and Primal Bond is LITERALLY Menhir’s Bulwark but for two handed builds. Also the

occultist end skill which is called possession, if some of you were doing 2H poison/vitality builds as a side note. So damage absorption is VERY important

to have.

// BIG UPDATE //

As of patch 1.0.5.0, I have made a moderate amount of changes to the build. I made a couple of augment changes and a bunch of devotion changes. You can

kill reaper of the lost in less than a minute now while face tanking him. This build also boasts 63k+ dps fully buffed and a base of 52k dps with no procs up

now: https://www.grimtools.com/calc/r2BGLqbV - NEWEST BUILD

I will keep the other version of my build up just in case you prefer it over the newer version of my build.

Last update:

I made a few tweaks to the build which now has max resistances excluding stun duration and a new medal.

Thank you to those who’ve tried out my 2H build. This is definitely a fun build to use!

NEWEST VERSION: FINALE!

https://www.grimtools.com/calc/xZyqx4qZ

If you have any suggestions just let me know or if you want me to create another build and have me try to make it as “tanky” as possible, let me know as well and i’ll try to make it work.

Shouldn’t this belong in the class, skills and builds section? http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=17

I don’t think I can move it. If I can, just let me know. But there isn’t any real reason to move it anyway as this topic is half talking about game play and half the discussion of my build used in gameplay. Technically, this is all part of the gameplay.

2H Ultos build without Kraken? Pathetic! No wonder you have only 30k DPS. Missed all the RR as well.

Hey… at least he wasn’t doing too bad. For a human…

Facetanking Reaper with a legit 2H build is unlikely. Once you have enough debuff stacks over you, burst damage is insane.

I’ve failed while trying, and it was a pretty well fed battlemage able to facetank Grava. No matter the Maiven’s (which isn’t shred to pieces by debuffs, as far as I know).

Someone could have managed to do it, I personally find it imaginary.

Uhm you dont :`) Joke, but yea u should try and change devotion so u can fit kraken ye

Thanks for the reply. I have used kraken and I just can’t afford to lose DA and armor over more dps unless you enjoy dying. No, in game dps is at 40k. RR didn’t make a difference against him and it’s not worth the hassle to get over other stats. This is not a shield build where you can freely grab some RR without much sacrificing of other stats. Pathetic? lol not one bit since I have a video of me face tanking him if you’ve watched it which is posted in my thread. But as for ravager, it has already been done and it’s on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1FipUE458M&t=249s

So I won’t count reaper of the lost as the first since someone was able to beat ravager with a 2h forcewave build. Mind you he’s 10x harder. I wasn’t even using pots in my fights. Thanks

Thanks for the reply

I have already tried it and it just doesn’t work since I would have to give up a bunch of DA and armor.

Lol are you an extra terrestrial? :stuck_out_tongue:

You shouldn’t be indifferent to pots as they can mike a significant difference on higher difficulty levels, and I can imagine them being a deciding factor in hardcore moments. Even then, many people only look at potions to buff resistances while there are many potions that clearly have offense in mind. I regularly use two potions and two oils, and I keep a stock of 50 of each where possible.

Devotions:
Now featuring Kraken, 2 points in Obelisk of Menhir and Solemn Watcher

Made some changes in Soldier and Shaman. I also made some augment changes.

Now featuring 3500+ DA and 4500+ armor!

This build:
The, “Reaper of the Lost” fight is now much much quicker than before and the kill time in my YouTube videos is now shortened by a lot with this newer build for the other 2 bosses. Also, along with any other boss you may fight.

This will probably be my last update for this thread. PM me if you want to discuss about builds.
