i own GD (with all DLCs) on steam, how can i back up save games (i dont want to lose my characters progress) and settings in order to reinstall windows?
Local saves or cloud saving? If local saves then go to C:\My Documents\My Games\Grim Dawn\save and back that file up onto a flash drive or key drive or similar. Then you can put them back when you’ve done the reinstall.
For settings I think you either need to make a note of what they are or take screenshots of them and save those to the same backup device you use for the saves.

Settings - simply copy your My Documents\my games\Grim Dawn folder and replace it afterwards.

If you’re using Steam Cloud Saves (Which I recommend) then everything will be backed up automatically every time you exit the game. When you reload Windows and re-install Grim Dawn, everything will be exactly as you left it.
Really, the only downside to Steam Cloud Saves is the occasional Steam blow-up (Solution: Reload Steam) and the inability to use Item Assistants. The latter can be replaced with Mules and the former is a non-issue due to it’s extremely low frequency.
Nice theory and all very well when it works, but relying on some 3rd party, that’s known to be unreliable in some cases (just search for the threads where people have relied on Steam and ended up with total loss), to ensure that all your time in a game isn’t lost is a bit risky.
Not only that, but using Steam DOESN’T back up your settings etc as the OP asked for as these are saved in the \my docs\my games\ grim dawn and NOT stored by steam in anyway

I’ve tried to copy save files, but when I launch GD, previous characters are not here in game…
