How to - Move your saves from Steam cloud to Grim Dawn's default location.

New guy here.

I’ve been with Steam forever, and I have Steam Cloud turned off in Steam.

I have not played the game yet (just downloaded it a few days ago)

I did start it to go to settings and turn off Steam cloud off, but only saw two entries (delete Steam Cloud saves, or not). I have not made a selection here.

Is this all I need to do to have the game put the saves on my computer, or do I need to delete Steam Cloud saves, or not?

Thanks.

Hiya and Welcome to Grim Dawn and the forums.

To make sure that GD saves to your Documents you can ignore any settings in the steam options for GD and simply when you start GD, go the the in game options and make sure that the “Cloud saving” is not ticked, as shown in the attached image.

One point to mention is that regardless of whether you use cloud or not, all your saves are stored on your PC as well as in the cloud if used.

The 2 locations in the first post are the save locations without cloud saving and with cloud saving.

Hope this helps, and please say if I’m not clear enough on any points

Thanks, appreciate it.

Same problem here:

 • no save game folder in the steam folder
 • no save game folder in the My Games folder
 • tried searching for my character name in my files but no luck so far
 • ofc have been playing with cloud save since start, it was turned on by default

Should I search file contents too?

EDIT: [Solved] found the Download Cloud Saves in the game (Options -> Network, look at the bottom right)

This downloaded the save files to C:\Users\username\Documents\my games\Grim Dawn\save and in Steam Installation save game folder

ok thanks. that’s really awesome.

I haven’t made it home yet to try, but one thing I wonder is if I can use the lvl 75 blank build save file downloaded from the forum here, and play multiplayer with friends testing build compatibility? I’d like to use the GDDefiler or GDStash programs to rename the save file, but I can’t seem to load the downloaded savefile into GDefiler to rename as I get a block error. If I put this save file in the appropriate directories at home, I assume I have to save it to the cloud as well, if I want to mess around with my friends online trying different builds together - will the file then be converted to the appropriate type for use with Gdefiler? Anyone have any experience here?

thanks for this post. Thought I lost my data after disabling cloud saves D:

I installed GD defiler last night and i used it but when i edit my character it revert to level 1. All my items also in my 1 character also gone. I also forgot to turn off my cloud save during the process. Please help me guys about this problem. How can i again get the items of my character? Thanks

I suggest you post in the GD defiler thread for help on this, all I can give is the locations of your save games, what you have done with your saved games with an external program is beyond my help.

Edit…Please always remember to back up your saves BEFORE using any modification tool.

Sorry what did I do with the userdata/8748798
I have alot of files and some config, ugc, etc
I tried to remove it , but then I lost all me chars, sorry for noob…
I can get me old chars back is I move userdata back to steam etc but I cant se Lars Madra lvl 74 test build, is it that is still reads from steam etc and not my games or something else…thanks for reply

Thanks this was helpful, I am wondering, the high lvl blank character was correct but I was trying to import a friends lvl 85 build to check it out and that one was correct image at front but only lvl 1 when start, is this maybe something you can not do I wonder:confused:

t
ty for explanantion

Can I assume that the opposite can also be done -> Going from GOG (stand-alone, not using galaxy) to steam? Why? Because I’m using Linux and I had to unfortunately format over my /home folder, I lost a near 50 level witchblade :furious:. . . and yes btw I do have grim dawn on both steam and GOG . . . .:stuck_out_tongue:

Yes…as the saves are the same, it’s just the location of the save. Hope this helps

I am new to Grim Dawn, I just want to ask something else.
I bought it from Steam and in few days I want to format my pc.
Should I back-up my saves or no need to do anything cause my saves will be in the Steam?

Welcome to Grim Dawn.

While Steam cloud might be good, I’d personally feel much happier having a full backup of my chars/saves/blueprints saved locally as well as relying on just Steam…

Also, even though you have bought it through Steam, do you have steam cloud saving enabled in BOTH the Steam client and in Grim Dawn, otherwise you will only have local saves

Much better to have a backup you don’t need, than to need a backup you don’t have…so backup and backup the backup just in case

Hello all,

Recently my pc died on me and now i cant retrieve my characters, i have acces to my old drive so i have the cloud save from that, i just cant get it to work. I did exactly like the above, Paste the save into Grimdawn. One thing i noticed in my new steam file is that it doesnt have a userdata map, and i can’t locate the new character i made.

Can someone help me out please ? I played for 526 hours and i’d hate to loose what i had.

I was in a similar boot. As I upgraded my PC and added my old hard drive to the new system. Took me a while, but finally got my guys to transfer in. I also have the cloud backup disabled, however I was able to bring them in this though the cloud by doing this:

I copied all my files from G:\Users\username\Documents\my games\Grim Dawn\save (my old drive I labeled “G:”, so change to wherever your old information is.) into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\folder of numbers\219990\remote\save

Not sure if “folder of numbers” is the same for each person. I did enable the steam cloud and created a new character. I searched my computer for that character name to find the exact path. My “folder of numbers” happened to be 70554625. It was the only folder before the “219990” folder, so finding the exact # isn’t critical.

After copying the character load up Grim Dawn (characters still won’t be listed) and on the main menu/Character screen go into “Options”. Then click on the “Network” tab. There I clicked on “Delete Cloud Saves” and “Yes”. Then clicked “Cancel” to exit the options. Another screen popped up saying “Steam Cloud Saving enabled. Import existing characters?”. I clicked on yes and all my old characters showed up.

I’m not sure why/how this worked with having cloud syncing disabled, but it worked. Hope this helps.

Many thanks for taking the time for posting that Scote

Regards the “Folder of numbers”, it’s different for each person which is why I listed it that way. I think each number is tied to a single account as it’s always the same set of numbers for me, but everyone else has a different number

@Badjakker which location did you copy your saves to, if it’s the Steam location then please make sure that you have steam cloud enabled in the game options otherwise all data will go to the doc > my games… location.

Also as I don’t know how old your saves are go to the \Save folder and make sure there’s a \Main folder with your chars in there and all your transfer/formula/transmute files in the \Save folder.
