I don't know what Character should I create.

Hi good day everyone. I’m currently experiencing a big problem. I have a level 66 Conjurer with a Bleed/Vit build. It’s currently on Ultimate Difficulty. I saw that guide in youtube which says that build is for beginners. But on Ultimate, I’m having a hard time clearing out waves. And I told to myself that I needed a new character. That’s why I created a Arcanist/Occulist. But again, I’m suffering from lots of deaths. With the AAR build. I don’t know what chracter should I get. I’m planning to have commando next. Is it good for beginners? I wanted to become strong in this game too. Thanks for the answers!

You will always encounter problems in ultimate. Don’t create a new character cause it gets hard:p If you are dying a lot something is wrong. Post the build you are have trouble with a grim calc

I think when it comes to bleed conjurers and AAR warlocks he’s got the right idea.

I’m planning to have commando next. Is it good for beginners?

Sort of. My 2H commando almost completed the ultimate with mostly gear from faction shops, but at the fort Ikon I decided that 23k sheet dps is a little too low and upgraded a few pieces to blue/legs.
As for shield commandos I heard they are beating the crap outta everything, but Idk how’re they on gear dependance, might turn out they are total garbage w/o markovian/warborn set.

I don’t know why people recommend Vitality, Bleed builds for beginners.

I personally would recommend a S&B Physical WB or S&B Physical Commando or 2h-Lightning Warder or Acid/Poison WH.
When i was a noob and not very active on the forums i used an Acid/Poison WH to do all the farming he was running on faction gear in Elite and killing anything in the way. The kite and kill nature of poison is really awesome to work with for beginner.

Physical on the other hand is easy to gear for you get a lot of nice items at secret vendors and a shield makes you invincible.

I will agree with the Acid/Poison for a beginner.

My character is still an Occultist he is level 49 he is sitting on 27 Mastery Point, 7 Attribute Point and 5 Devotion points. I just killed the strange boss in Fort Ikon (in the Armory) by letting my Hellhound take aggro throw Curse / Blood / DEE (2x) and let him die in peace.
When I FINALLY decide which way to take the 2nd Mastery I will get some much needed stat to wear stuff I’m sitting on

S&B look super strong cause Soldier look super tanky I’m tempted to go that way with my 3rd Character as it will be really different (DEE Poison build Solo and PRM Arcanist that I play with my friend)

I have built 3 arcanist/occultist toons so far. 2 of them just obliterate everything, included sentinel, spider, nemesis… anything. The third one is not so op but handles reasonably well anyway.

And then, many ppl around here (“here” means the forums, not just this thread) recommend going soldier/X to beginners. And, see, my melee toons don’t perform like my casters, no matter how hard I try. Wth, some just plain suck.

What I mean here is… maybe there’s no problem with warlock or conjurer builds, maybe it’s just not the right class combo for you. Man, I ve seen some conjurers around that are just omgwtfbbq. What works for others may just not work for you, and the other way around.

Mess around, experiment, tinker… eventually you will find what works for you. Ignore online guides. Quite often those who post them have no clue, or they keep the best builds for themselves and only post the ones that are just OK.

Still, if you are determined to go caster, feel free to toss me a private message and I’ll be glad to discuss your build with you. I may give you some ideas.

I’m not sure if I agree with all of this. Of course, tinkering and figuring out what works for you is always the best option. But guides are a good way of seeing what people are using, and there are some generally good tips involved. Like many people get confused by damage conversion, resistance reduction, etc. What I would really like to see is an all around general “mechanics” guide for certain aspects of the combat system that aren’t quite as obvious, or maybe confusing. And maybe some general leveling tips, like what components are good for leveling, skills to skip early but are good to get later. You can usually find stuff like that in guides, but you’ll rarely find good explanations as to WHY those are good ideas.

As far as people keeping the best builds for themselves, I’m pretty sure that’s not how the Grim Dawn community works. People might not feel like sharing their builds, but I doubt any of them are hording the best builds for themselves. There’s no reason to really; there is zero competition in Grim Dawn. There are most definitely some great guides here on the forum, and many of them are some of the most powerful builds in the game.

Of course, not everything gets posted and it’s possible that there are some really great builds out there that haven’t been shared. That’s part of the fun of Grim Dawn, finding builds that are great, fun, and work for you.

Ignore online guides.

There was a user called hellcat back in early 2016. At the thread, more or less like that, a user was asking if he could build around the dual Slime Bolter. I laughed at the idea and suggested him to stick to proven builds like DEE (non-CD!) Warlock I was playing and use Slime Bolters just as stat sticks, and don’t care too much about early game items because they’ll get outdated anyway. Then hellcat came and said smth like “Don’t read guides, don’t listen to people, they almost always don’t know what they are talking about”. Also said that he could still use his Slime Bolters, suggested a Fire Strike pyro for this.

At the time I disagreed with him, greatly (actually, just grew to dislike him over a number of his posts, for reasons I don’t remember). But then I found out that DEE was in a dire need of gear to progress on ultimate, my DPS was, like, 5 or 6k. And then the patch came that cut the %weapon component and it was down to 4k. Yes, that low. Back then %bonuses from devotions weren’t that powerful and most people avoided them. I had high hopes for Dreeg set, but found out I couldn’t farm ultimate without it at all. Only later I would know that assembling a set takes absurdly long time. On the other hand, DW Fire Strike gunslingers back then were the best builds around and the build could’ve proven to be good even after Slime Bolters became outdated.

I was wrong at the time. I believed that if a guide was posted then it’s a good build, and if it does well on normal and elite then it would be ok for ultimate.

So, good advice actually.

Can’t say you must not read any online guide, but at least don’t take them very seriously. Most guides are made by people to showcase their high-end builds, not to help beginners like you. The best you can do is to create a thread, link your grimcalc build, post some gear screenshots, etc, and just ask for advice.

P.S. For some reason I find Kaska just as annoying as hellcat. Wonder if he’s still playing GD and drops here from time to time.

Well, sorry. It was not the intention. And yes, I am actively playing and loving the game and (believe it or not) the community.

Let me rephrase that. I do read guides. But not builds. I may read that advanced mechanics thread with interest, but then I prefer using that knowledge my own way. I happen to be the type of player who is not precisely agile and nimble when actually playing but makes up for it with some talent to figure out good builds on his own (and no, the intention here is not bragging).

And since I get plenty of enjoyement out of building up my own combos, I guess my natural tendency is encouraging other players to do so. It’s all with the best intention shrugs.

of wich faction ? I never see Acid/Poison stuff in there shop exept in Rovers but lvl 35

Faction gear are good for lvl 35 and 50.

I run an Poison/Acid build and I just did gear myself with Faction gear. I MAY mistake some place but let’s see

I know Devil Crossing offer a Jewel (I think it is Ring)

Homestead offer Off-Hand and another Jewel (Once again I think Amulet)

The third Jewel must be at Rovers as Kymon don’t offer Poison Damage and I’m not high enough with Black Legion yet.

So yeah Off-Hand 2 Ring 1 Amulet 1 Medal from Faction gear. A guy I did trade with dropped me a good weapon (I was running on a yellow mace with 110% poison damage at level 55). The armor is defensive and simply couple of epic I found along the way.

Oh ok, I Think the stuff was lvl 70 but yes, there is a good stuff for low level in the faction

I just ask because I start the game few weeks ago and my first character was a WH Aci/Poison, now lvl 70 ^^

But yes, I Think Acid/Poison is a good first character for beginner, big dps, little bit squishi but you just need to run like a little girl until your skill is ready ^^

What’s a good Poison/Acid build? I’ve been hoping to make a DW toon.

I’m using this one :

http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45635

That was my first chara with this built and I’m not disappointed, deal big damage with not very high stuff.

In the Compendium V, you got another WH Build with poison and Dreeg’s set who is very similar

Enjoy It

Loving it so far. Should I focus on flat and +%psn as I level…using my gear to focus on survivability?

Personally I focus poison but you are a little bit skishy or you need to run until your cd is not up ^^
But i’m a beginner on this game, that was my first chara, i’m lvl 72 ^^

I would suggest simply refunding your spent points and making a pet build out of your conjerer. Those are generally amazingly easy for first characters, and you’ll already be level 66.

Or rework your current build to focus more on Vit primarily and farm better gear. Also, if you’re having issues in Ultimate, there’s no shame in farming Elite a bit for upgrades and rep.

100% agreed, I’m 72 and still farming BoC and SoT in Elite and farming faction, I loot big upgrade for dps and res !!

I’m currently playing a pet/bleed/vitality conjurer in Ultimate act 2 level 76. Destroying everything I use the bloody pox transmuter frenzy so you have to be on your toes or yea you die. About to start killing undead so we’ll see how that goes. Planned on sharing build once all my devotion points were unlocked 48/50 now.
