… and man did it get old! I played this game to death in my youth, and stopped playing it like 5 years ago.
The graphics are still top notch, especially the atmosphere, utterly fantastic to stroll through Greece once again (and also the Masteries, I love them so much, even if they are clearly less rich than the ones in GD). But man the gameplay feels so clunky! And slow as hell - I felt like a snail going to another snail’s funeral. And don’t get me started on the old targeting system! Well I guess the benefit is that now I do fully appreciate the new one in GD!
So I guess it shows how well the devs did on GD: it really feels superior in every way regarding the gameplay, the level design and the story telling. Congrats for such an awesome feat guys, you are really good at what you are doing
They improve the combat a lot but that’s about it. The amount of detail the towns in Titan quest have is outstanding. From the small vegetables on the market stalls to the townspeople talking with each other. In Grim down they only standing still minus very few times, like the farmers of Homestead. Crate need to hire some animators and fix the lifeless npc’s along with their horrible portraits.
Am i asking to much for an Arpg or is supposed Arpg’s to be only about weapon damage, cool skills and balancing?:undecided:
Yeah, from a quality of life perspective TQ is clunky by today’s standards. I am reminded to keep shift pressed for each and every encounter so that I can shave some clicks of meleers, and for kiters… well… clickclickclickclickclickclick. No auto complete nothing, no auto pick up nothing, it’s a different direction altogether.
The pace is absolutely zen. You HAVE to take in the trees, the rocks, the grass, the birds chirping in the background while you’re fighting, otherwise there’s no way you can reach level 14. Movement speed is glacial, but the great margin of improvement allows it to make characters feel more lively when you get it, especially with those springy running animations. Enemies start out running in slow motion and become quite agile in Legendary, adding even more to the different feel of difficulties, apart from the extra bosses.
I don’t play that much anymore, but when nostalgia hits, I still enjoy the game very much, and once I get reacquainted with the clunky controls and the absence of QoL features I’m right at home.
GD has some of the best lore and story imo, and it easily rivals that which AAA studios output. Portraits could use some work, but I definitely disagree that skills/balance/weapon damage are all that GD offers
If you think the game feels clunky and slow you should try playing it Naked. Only weapons/shields/staves, relics/charms and potions can be used - NOTHING else!
I must say I don’t find that much difference, but then I’m still playing TQ daily and have access to gear from my Vault collection so my toons tend to start off with some extra speed anyway. TQ is 10 years old now so you do have to expect it to start showing it’s age. Still a great game though.
If you enjoy playing with pets you might like to try Bumbleguppy’s Legion of Champions mod. All masteries now have pets, mobs are a bit bigger and some are of different foes than normal, more heroes to tackle, new loot and most of the usual items have pet bonuses too.
But who can deny the vast amount of voice acting that TQ had over GD - no two traders sounded the same, or had the same lines. And all those NPCs that weren’t even linked to quests, but would randomly tell you a story - it just added to the immersion really nicely. And, the towns were great too - GD stimulates a different feel with the approach of a few bases that you keep returning too, whereas TQ was more a journey through the ancient lands, always finding new and unique towns and cities.
Yeah, this is spot on. It’s just a different direction as you said, a much more contemplative game, where the atmosphere is essential (while it might be just a plus for others).
I have to say nostalgia hit big time when I played it yesterday, and I think with more involvement I will get past the clunky gameplay (which is as medea fleecestealer said perfectly fine since the game is 10 years old!)
Did pretty much the same, when I played TQ with a friend a while back who doesn’t have GD so far, and I had exactly the opposite feeling, about the more atmospheric lore, distinct masteries, versatile areas, etc.
Doesn’t mean I dislike GD, just I miss that enkindling spark I had with TQ.
TQ gameplay doesn’t feel clunky because it’s old. It feels clunky because it has always been clunky. Nox is a lot older than TQ and isn’t clunky in the slightest. Gameplay clunkyness is why TQ has always been a bit of a difficult game for me to get into early on. Well, that, and overly large environments.
I’m pretty sure TQ is bigger overall in raw map space. The only thing I’ve seen so far in GD that’s obnoxiously big is the Blood Grove. Maybe some of the stuff in Old Arkovia. In TQ, you’d have an oversized zone every five minutes.
Especially all those places with <insert animal here>men camps.
I think it took me about as long on average to clear Act I as it may, at this rate, take me to clear all of GD if I’m guessing at its size right.
No, I never skip any act in TQ and yes I explore everywhere every time. Well, no tell a lie, I sometimes skip through the fighting on the way to Hades Palace entrance because the noise there drives me crazy. But that’s the only bit. And that is a big section I admit, but no worse than plowing through the Warden’s underground complex to tackle the boss.
War camp outside Athens, run round the Giza plateau, Valley of the Kings, etc, can all be done in around half an hour/40 minutes. Whereas it took me all yesterday afternoon (2-3 hours) to get from the Broken Hills portal to Smuggler’s Pass portal via 3 levels of Steps of Torment. I was really wondering if I’d make it to Smuggler’s Pass before I had to give up on the session. The lack of TQ’s rebirth fountains make it more difficult too.
If you mean revisit as in Crate revisiting it, probably not going to happen. TQ is owned by Nordic nowadays so unless they somehow contract Crate to do it or Crate somehow purchases ownership you’ll have to lobby Nordic to see it done.
