Is that true Crate released pirated versions of FF broken on purpose

Just saw some thread on Reddit where some guy on steam forum asked about a bug with in game time and one of the developers closed the topic and “recommended” buying the game implying he used a pirated version. And many people on Reddit said that this is “a form of protection” from the devs meaning they released themselves a broken version of the game on purpose.
Is that true?

It’s probably more of a piracy protection thing where something detects if something is different from a bought version. There’s heaps of examples of this in gaming, including things that do funny things.

Of course not. Since the game is only available on Steam it was quite obvious that the person doesn’t own the game as there is no mouse icon next to their username.

You can see it next to mine showing that I do.

They even said in another now deleted Steam thread that they didn’t own the game.

I advise staying away from Reddit, more misinformation there than is good for you.

Yes, I mean the dude probably pirated it, but the main point is that devs themselves put some effort in breaking the game for pirates - is that true?

Of course not. Reddit just being idiotic again with nothing better to talk about.

There are no “bugs” deliberately introduced into the game to deter piracy. Though if there were…so what?

That user pretty blatantly came into the forum asking for mods for the “non steam version”, which is not a thing. So if they don’t plan to support our work, we don’t think that gives them the privilege to participate in our community.

And I understand that there are many reasons people may pirate games, and sometimes it’s just the sad reality that someone literally cannot afford them. That’s not a lost sale, that wasn’t going to be one to begin with. If your financial situation is fine or you’re doing it in “protest” of Steam or some other nonsense, you can fuck right off though with your high horse.

We definitely had cases where pirates turned around and bought the game later, even apologetically, so I’m willing to give them a chance, but maybe don’t come to the forum announcing your piracy.

Also common in Reddit is a critical lack of reading comprehension. Make a post asking for advice and saying that A and B didn’t work? They suggest A and B. Or respond to some random thing other thing you weren’t talking about.

Thank you for clarifying the situation, I turned sour over the info that devs deliberately broke pirated versions of their game, thankfully it was fake.
Hey, it’s not like I was going to pirate FF, I just don’t think that it’s good behavior.
I am planning to buy the definitive edition of FF at some point later. And I have bought Grim Down on GOG during a sale. Hopefully we see FF on GOG as well.

Protecting one’s project in which one spends time, resources, and money is bad behavior.

Stealing, aka pirating, software is good behavior.

LOL

Don’t put words in my mouth, I said neither.
I don’t think It’s a good thing breaking a pirated copy of a game on purpose.
When I first read that on Reddit it even made me think about supporting this company, I wouldn’t want to support companies which go out of their way and make their product miserable for some group of people, even outlawed like pirates. I am glad they didn’t do it.

It does seem that BigBadAss33 took Zantai’s advice and bought the game.

Why not? I think it’s quite funny tbh. They take your potential income, only fair to take some of their time.

Here’s some funny anti-piracy vignettes in games over the years

I’m sure the people at crate is good people and would give a free copy of their game for people who don’t have money if they just ask nicely, i mean, i would support that idea and giving back is good in life.
