The way it’s presented and even named, it’s implied that some shenanigans are happening. Yet there aren’t any alternative characters in Kurnhold that would even talk about the quest.
Should I keep searching, talk to drangouls maybe? Or is there nothing more to that quest than just returning the weapons to the shady guy?
Look around in the camp near where you found Jornast trapped. Then you can talk to another NPC in Kurnhold for a different conclusion for the quest.

I only found out that Joonast gets thrown in with the pigs (well, Stonetusk Boars) if you report him. I never even noticed there were pigs there in front of the pig farmer guy, since you have to rotate the camera to see them.

This quest honestly never made sense to me. Is there maybe some post resolution lore I missed?
Here’s my issue:
You find the guy in a cage in the groble camp. You find the ledger on the dead guy not far off. The ledger is apparently “unusual”. It says: “A ledger of weapons and other metal implements, indicating that they were originally bound for Kurnhold. Definitely not something that would typically be found among Groble belongings.” Nothing suspicious about that part. Yeah, something like that wouldn’t be found in groble belongings…but it’s not. It’s found on a dead guy they either killed in their camp or killed and dragged to their camp. It’s not like the grobles are holding the ledger themselves. The one suspicious part is that Joonast says he was delivering weapons south to a border town we wouldn’t have heard of, but the ledger says the stuff was meant for Kurnhold. Strange, but plans can change.
Joonast asks us to bring the weapons to him in Kurnhold if we find them, so we do. But we can report him for supplying the grobles to the guy just a few steps north. But if he was supplying the grobles, why is he in a cage? They certainly wouldn’t throw him in a cage as a ruse to fool anybody, cause what madman just waltzes into a fully armed groble camp? Were they about to kill him like they killed the other guy? Why kill him if he’s supplying them and apparently has been for some time? And why did they kill the other guy? Was he not in on the scheme? Also, why the hell would Joonast supply the grobles? Do they pay well? Do they even have currency? So many questions.
I have similar questions about the Gulder family shield quest. If we kill the quest giver after, we get rep with Kurnhold. For killing one of their own. In their town. Something they specifically warn us not to do unless we want to die. So she was a Bloodbound? The only indication we get that she was is the out-of-world reputation gain window. I haven’t found anybody have any additional lore about her so our character has no clue if they did the right thing.
I never killed her so far, as she seemed to be genuinely shocked that her family was Bloodbound. Or she is a very good liar…
As for Joonast, I think he worked with the Grobles to hijack a shipment, whether he killed that messenger or the Grobles did, we will not know. Probably, he then tried to ask more for his services and he got put in a cage as punishment? Grobles are defintiely intelligent, like the Slith they have shamans who casts spells, and Dranghouls can lead them, so they must be able to talk. They can probably pay using the money they take from travelers.
